A retired professor of English at the University of Alabama since 1988, Mr. Francis taught on campus for 22 years. He formerly taught at Emory University, DeKalb State University, the University of Tennessee and Pennsylvania State University beginning in 1950. Prior to working in academia, he worked in the accounting department of a factory that manufactured zippers. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin and a Master of Arts from Brown University. In 1989, he was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Alabama.
He began writing while he was teaching in Pennsylvania State University. His first story was accepted by the literary magazine "Prairie Schooner." Hs works include two novels: "Goya, Are You With Me Now?" 1999 and "The Invisible Country" 2003, and five collections of stories: "The Itinerary of Beggars" 1973 (winner of the Iowa School of Letters Award for Short Fiction), "Naming Things" 1980 (winner of the Illinois Short Fiction series), "A Disturbance of Gulls" 1983, "The Sudden Trees and Other Stories" 1999, and "I'll Never Leave You" 2004 (winner of the G.S. Sharat Chandra Prize for Short Fiction). His stories have been anthologized in "Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards," "The Best American Short Stories," "The Pushcart Prize" and "Alabama Prize Stories." Although he writes only prose, some critics have characterized his writing style as poetic. Influenced by his studies in world literature, especially Spanish literature, his work has been known to feature themes of penetration of the complexity of human nature. He was a translator of several Argentine writers and published numerous translations in books and in American literary magazines. He served as contributing editor to "Thunder Mountain Review" and as poetry editor for "This Issue." He was a founding member of The Huntsville Literary Association and The Old Towne Historical District in Huntsville.

Born in Rhode Island, Mr. Francis graduated from Colt Memorial High School as class valedictorian. Serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant, Mr. Francis was stationed in England, France and Italy. After the war, he was fortunate to be able to use the G.I. Bill to attend college. The proud father of Carlos Roberto, an Argentinian boy whom Mr. Francis adopted as his son, Carlos is now a father and grandfather who lives in Argentina with a big family. Enjoying acting and swimming in retirement, Mr. Francis has been included in the 58th and 59th editions of Who's Who in America.
