Retiring from the engineering industry after more than 40 successful years, Mr. Speiser concluded his career as a senior staff system engineer with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, GA, in 2012 after 10 years with the organization. Employed with several other companies over the years as well, including Marz, Inc., and Texas Instruments, he spent the majority of his time with McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics Company and McDonnell-Douglas Missile Systems Company in St. Louis, MO. Hired as an engineer in 1971, he later served as a senior engineer, lead engineer, unit chief and St. Louis section chief until 1992. Mr. Speiser also devoted 10 years as a consultant and developer of microcomputer database management application systems between 1986 and 1996, was a recruiter for MDC Astronautics Company and MDC Missile Systems Company between 1980 and 1985 and was the owner of Speiser's Dental Laboratory for 22 years between 1974 and 1996.
Enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1970, Mr. Speiser served as an E5 for four years before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves from 1974 to 1976. An electronics technician in the service at the time, he quickly found that particular aspect of engineering enjoyable. Entering college soon thereafter, he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1977, followed by a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1979 at the University of Missouri.
A subject matter expert on the small diameter bomb and the engineer responsible for the integration of SDB on the F-22 Raptor, Mr. Speiser also originated, developed and designed key engineering concepts for Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) as a member of a seven-person product definition team, leading to win of full-scale engineering and production program. He was a team leader for a Guidance and Control engineering group on the SLAM missile program as well, which was successfully completed on a very aggressive two-year development and integration and test schedule. An early advocate of the use of personal computers in the engineering areas, Mr. Speiser was also instrumental in their introduction and use on the SLAM program. Furthermore, he proposed and sold a concept of real-time, man-in-the-loop simulation to management and the U.S. Navy. This simulation contributed to providing realistic data in testing of missile guidance software and human performance factors at a very reasonable cost, reducing the need for extended flight test schedules.
Authoring various publications in his field through McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company during his tenure, Mr. Speiser has written on a number of topics relative to his work. He is also a longstanding member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and several fraternities. Notably, he has been highlighted in several editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. For his time served in the U.S. Coast Guard, he was recognized with an Award of Excellence in 1971 and a Letter of Commendation in 1972.
Married to Phoebe Louise Winholt, Mr. Speiser has three children and three grandchildren. In 2016, he donated his free time by volunteering as a planetarium exhibit volunteer at the St. Louis Science Center. Continuing to enjoy the small pleasures in life, he loves to hike, bird watch and work in his garden. He also enjoys genealogy and investing.
