Amassing more than four decades of professional experience, Dr. Beeton is a prominent and versatile commerce expert who most recently served as a senior scientific advisor for the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, DC, from 1998 to 2002, when he reached emeritus status. Prior to this appointment, he was the acting chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1996 to 1997, director of the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory from 1986 to 1996, and a professor of engineering and natural resources at the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1986. Likewise, he served the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in several capacities, including as the associate dean of the Graduate School, professor of zoology, and associate director and assistant director of the Center for Great Lakes Studies. He commenced his career as the chief of research and fishery biologist with the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Beeton has been serving on the board of directors of the University of Michigan since 2006. Previously, he was the president of the Ecology Center at the University of Michigan, where he also acted as an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health. The former chairman of the scientific advisory board of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, he was also an adjunct visiting professor at Oregon State University, an advisor for the World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization in Venezuela, a consultant for the Environmental Protection Agency, and an advisor on projects in Ghana, Laos and Yugoslavia with the Smithsonian Institution, among other roles.
Dr. Beeton delved into his career choice after being influenced by a grade school teacher, who was an environmental activist. Interested in fisheries and the ecology of lakes, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy between 1952 and 1958. After gaining prominence in the field, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1996. A prolific author in his field of study, Dr. Beeton has additionally contributed myriad articles to the Encyclopedia Britannica and chapters to books.
In order to remain aware of recent developments within the industry, Dr. Beeton has also maintained affiliation with several organizations, including the International Association for Theoretical and Applied Limnology, where he served as the national representative for the United States from 1976 to 1995. In addition, he was on the board of directors of the Great Lakes Observing Systems and the Detroit Audubon Society at the turn of the century. He further associates with the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography, the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, and the International Association for Great Lakes Research.
As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Beeton has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest. Dr. Beeton married Ruth Holland in 1966, bringing with him three children from a previous marriage. The couple later had two children together. They also enjoy their eight grandchildren.
