Hurley, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Inspired by his experiences studying mathematics in college, Dr. Hurley firmly believes that good teaching can conquer math anxiety in formative-aged students. He prepared for his career with considerable academic accomplishments. He earned an Associate of Arts from Phoenix College in 1959 and went on to earn both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Arizona State University. The recipient of a National Science Foundation cooperative graduate fellowship, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1966 and went on to work as a math lecturer and eventual assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Hurley began work as an associate professor at the University of Connecticut in 1971, and after spending time as a professor of mathematics, director of the undergraduate computing lab and associate head of the math department, retired there in 2003, earning the rank of professor emeritus.

Alongside his long-term professional accomplishments, Dr. Hurley served as a visiting Fulbright-Hays professor at such schools as De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University, among other positions as a visiting lecturer, fellow and scholar. Demonstrating considerable skill and expertise, along with enthusiasm for mathematics education, he penned such works as "Litton's Problematical Recreations" in 1971, "Intermediate Calculus" in 1980, "Multivariable Calculus" in 1981, "Calculus" in 1987, "Calculus: A Contemporary Approach" in 1992 and "Calculus: An Introductory Approach" in 1993.

Dr. Hurley's considerable contributions to mathematics and education have been recognized with numerous awards. He was honored with a Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award from the University of Connecticut Alumni Association in 2002, the Chancellor Information Technology Award from the University of Connecticut in 1999, and was a grantee of National Science Foundation programs in 1988 and 1992, among other notable recognitions in his field. He also maintains memberships with the American Mathematics Society and the Mathematics Association of America, constantly keeping alert of new developments. Since retiring, he has developed an interest in meteorology, and has engaged in observational work with the help of local media outlets.
