Mr. Van Hoy has worked as a partner of his own firm, Van Hoy, Reutlinger, Adams & Dunn, in Charlotte, NC, since 1989. He began his law career as a part of the labor counsel at Duke Power Company from 1973 to 1980. Following this, he became an associate of Siegel, O'Connor & Kainen from 1980 to 1983 and then a partner of Mullins & Van Hoy from 1983 to 1989. During this tenure, he has also been a member of the North Carolina OSHA Review Commission and the North Carolina Personnel Commission from 1985 to 1992, as well as the North Carolina Leadership Council of Mecklenburg County.
Mr. Van Hoy earned a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in Durham, NC, in 1970. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of North Carolina in 1973. Immediately after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1973 to 1981, having been discharged as a first lieutenant. In conjunction with his education and service, he fulfilled a number of civic duties within his local community. He was the chairman of the Mecklenburg County Young Republican Committee in 1979 and an alternate delegate for the Republican National Convention in Detroit in 1980. He then became vice president of the Mecklenburg County Republican Party from 1980 to 1983, and then the co-state chairman of Gardner for Lieutenant Governor in 1988. He was also a member of the Duke University Athletics Council from 1999 to 2002, as well as many other associations in his field.
Mr. Van Hoy was featured in an issue of Business North Carolina Magazine in 2002 and an issue of Forbes Magazine and American Airlines Sky Radio in 2005. He was also included among the Outstanding Lawyers of America in 2003, and has been continuously included among the Best Lawyers in America since 2001 and the North Carolina Super Lawyers since 2006. In addition, he was honored as Lawyer of the Year in Employment Law for the city of Charlotte, NC, 2012, 2013 and 2019, and has received a salute from America's Best Lawyers. He is the first lawyer on both sides of his family, and he is listed in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America as well as several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
