Bruce Lynn Umminger, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Umminger is a retired federal government agency administrator, research scientist in marine biology and educator who most recently worked as a consultant for The Implementation Group in Washington from 2006 to 2013 and the University of Nebraska and the National Science Foundation from 2006 to 2009. His background with the National Science Foundation included 27 years in various roles such as program director of the regulatory biology program and division director of the cellular biosciences division and the integrative biology and neuroscience division. Between 1999 and 2006, Dr. Umminger served as Senior Scientist in the Office of Integrative Activities where he was in charge of science and technology centers.

Prior to his work at the National Science Foundation, Dr. Umminger was a professor in academia for 10 years between 1969 and 1979. Teaching in the department of biological sciences at the University of Cincinnati, he was also the director of graduate affairs of biological sciences and acting head of the department. An expert in the physiology of fish, Dr. Umminger has been interested in the study of plants and animals since he was a young child.

Following his childhood dreams, Dr. Umminger has enjoyed many opportunities in the field. He spent time on several research advisory committees for the NASA, chaired the proposal planning panel in biology for the Science Foundation Ireland, worked on international biotechnology research policy for the U.S. Department of State, and was an executive secretary for the advisory planning board for a National Biodiversity Information Center at the Smithsonian Institution, among other roles. He has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and contributed chapters to several books in his field. Dr. Umminger has also been an associate editor for the Journal of Experimental Zoology and an editorial advisory board member for General and Comparative Endocrinology.

Dr. Umminger is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was elected chairperson of the Biological Sciences Section from 1987 to 1988. He was elected national secretary of American Society of Zoologists from 1979 to 1981. Additionally, he was a member of the Association of Yale Alumni, Mory's Association and Mensa, to name a few. Dr. Umminger is also the former president of the University of Cincinnati chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, who later obtained their annual Distinguished Research Award.

Locally involved in various religious causes for many years, Dr. Umminger is presently a facilitator of the centering prayer group at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, N.C. since 2013. He formerly served as a member of the world mission committee at Church of the Redeemer in New Haven, Conn., and was on the Sunday School steering committee and the adult education committee at Calvary Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as a senior acolyte. Likewise, Dr. Umminger has served as an adult education committee member and deacon at Faith Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Va.

Honored for his work numerous times, Dr. Umminger received the Presidential Meritorious Executive Award from the National Science Foundation in 1992, which was signed by George H.W. Bush. It is one of the highest recognitions granted by the federal government. He was a member of the Senior Executive Service. He also received an research grant from the National Science Foundation from 1971 to 1979, who previously recognized him as a graduate fellow in 1964. Dr. Umminger has notably been cited in approximately 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Politics and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. At the University of Cincinnati, he received the George Rieveschl University Research Award and was elected a Fellow of the Graduate School.

Dr. Umminger earned a Bachelor of Science in biology, magna cum laude, and a Master's degree, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy at Yale University. He also completed postgraduate work at the University of California at Berkeley between 1963 and 1964. Dr. Umminger is a certified university administrator through the University of Cincinnati and is certified through the federal executive institute.
