The National Science Foundation gave Peter Sherwood a Special Creativity Award and an Outstanding Performance Award.

With 42 years of professional experience, Dr. Sherwood has been recognized as dean emeritus and regents professor emeritus of Oklahoma State University since 2012, having been dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and regents professor of physics since 2004. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a distinguished professor and head of chemistry at Kansas State University from 1997 to 2004, having been professor from 1991 to 1997 and associate professor from 1985 to 1990, also serving as a program officer of the chemistry division of the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC, from 1990 to 1991. Earlier in his career, Dr. Sherwood was a senior lecturer and lecturer with Newcastle University in England from 1972 to 1985.

Dr. Sherwood began his career as a student at the University of St. Andrews, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1967. He then joined Cambridge University, completing a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1970, serving in a fellowship with the institution's Downing College until 1972. His scholarship was recognized by the award of a Doctor of Science degree by Cambridge University in 1995.

A respected voice in his field, Dr. Sherwood has been affiliated with numerous organizations in his community. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, the Materials Research Society, the Electrochemical Society and Sigma Xi. Dr. Sherwood has been recognized as a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics, the Cambridge Philosophical Society, the AVS Science and Technology Society, and The Salters' Company in London, England.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sherwood has been recognized for his contributions. The National Science Foundation gave him a Special Creativity Award and an Outstanding Performance Award. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in America. In his free time, Dr. Sherwood enjoys church architecture, hill walking and cartography.
