J. Richard McIntosh Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

J. Richard McIntosh was honored as an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow in 1984 and the Guggenheim Fellow from 1990 to 1991.

Since 1970, Dr. McIntosh has been employed at the University of Colorado. Beginning in 2006, he has been a distinguished emeritus professor at the University of Colorado, and in the seven years leading up to this post, he was a distinguished professor. From 1986 to 2005, Dr. McIntosh served as director in the university's Lab for High Voltage Electron Microscopy. From 1977 to 1978, he held the position of the chairman of the molecular, cellular and developmental biology department. Before becoming a full professor at the university, Dr. McIntosh was an associate professor from 1972 to 1976 and an assistant professor from 1970 to 1972.

Prior to his employment at the University of Colorado, Dr. McIntosh was an assistant professor of biology at Harvard University from 1968 to 1970 and an instructor in mathematics and physics at the Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, MA from 1961 to 1963. In addition to these numerous positions, he was recognized as a Fulbright Fellow in Uganda, where he studied African sleeping sickness at Makerere University from 2003 to 2004. Likewise, Dr. McIntosh held the role of a visiting professor in Uganda, Tanzania and Ghana from 2006 to 2016.

Dr. McIntosh has always held a curiosity for the way things operate. He considers the highlight of his career to be the moments in which his studies meet unexpected results. This inquisitiveness led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in physics from Harvard University in 1961. Dr. McIntosh continued on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in biophysics from Harvard University in 1968.

Beyond all of his positions at universities, Dr. McIntosh remains involved in the field in other capacities. He is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, where he served on the council from 1977 to 1980 and 1986 to 1989 as well as president in 1994. From 1971 to 1990, he was a frequent grantee of the American Cancer Society and served on the society's cell biology panel from 1983 to 1987 then as research professor from 1994 to 2005. He was a member of their advisory council from 1997 to 2001. He has been a grantee of the National Institutes of Health since 1974 and a member of the molecular cytology study section from 1988 to 1992. Additionally, Dr. McIntosh is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. McIntosh has been acknowledged for his accomplishments throughout the years. He was the recipient of a 1974 Teaching Recognition Award from the University of Colorado. In 1976 and 1990, he won a Scholar Award from the American Cancer Society. Dr. McIntosh was a grantee of the National Science Foundation from 1970 to 1982.

Additionally, Dr. McIntosh was honored as an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow in 1984 and the Guggenheim Fellow from 1990 to 1991. Dr. McIntosh has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
