Lonieta Aurora Thompson Cornwall, EdD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Lonieta Aurora Thompson Cornwall was the recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue in 2012.

Dr. Thompson Cornwall has served as adjunct professor of worship and liturgy at Shaw University Divinity School in Raleigh, N.C. In addition to her religious teaching role with Shaw, she has also been a longtime Associate Professor of Music in the Visual and Performing Arts Department since 1984, teaching courses in Music Theory, Conducting, African American Music, and Piano. Furthermore, she is also the director of choral studies. Prior to entering higher academia, Dr. Thompson Cornwall was a music teacher for the Board of Education in New York City.

A pianist, organist, choral director, liturgist, arranger and composer, Dr. Thompson Cornwall is a very versatile performer and educator. Since 2000, she has been serving as the director of music at the First Reformed Church of Cary, N.C. She spent many previous years as organist and minister of music for churches throughout New York and North Carolina. Among her musical compositions are "Canticles for the Soul", Hebrews 25 –"Let Us Encourage One Another," and "Pater Noster." Her dissertation, "The African American Art Song-A Continuum in the Art of Song," was completed in 2006. She has presented at the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc., African American Art Song Alliance - University of California, at Irvine, has served as musical consultant for the Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee in Raleigh, N.C. between 1995 and 2004, and was choir master for the Gospel Extravaganza –North Carolina Symphony between 2007 and 2008.

Dr. Thompson Cornwall is a longstanding member of several professional organizations, including the National Association for the Study and Performance of African American Music, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc., and the American Guild of Organists, among others. She twice served on the board of directors for the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, and the North Carolina Bach Festival.

When it comes to community, Dr. Thompson Cornwall has been just as present. She was a missionary in Zambia, South Africa with Operation Reachback in 2000. She was also a participant with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in North Carolina during 2002, and the North Carolina State Workers –Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration in Raleigh from 2000 to 2009. She served as Chair for the School Board at Gethsemane Seventh-day Adventist Church School from 1995 to 2000. She continues to volunteer at Gethsemane as a Music Instructor, a position she has held for over fifteen years.

In 2012, Dr. Thompson Cornwall was the recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue. The award is given to those who have a record of excellence in the state of North Carolina, those who contribute to the community, who show outstanding career efforts, and those who have put in many years of service to their organizations. It is the highest honor a North Carolina governor can bestow upon a North Carolina citizen. Dr. Thompson Cornwall also received a 2008 H. B. Caple Humanitarian Award from Shaw University, 2002 Lamplighter Award by the Light's 103.9 FM, 1999 Crystal Award by Women's Ministries of South Atlantic Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. She has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.

Dr. Thompson Cornwall's parents both played musical instruments and sang. Her brother is a violist and educator of renown. She obtained a MusB and MusM at Manhattan School of Music in New York, a second Master of Music at Union Theological Seminary, School of Sacred Music, and an EdD at the Teacher's College at Columbia University.
