John Barnwell Nettles received a National Faculty Award, a Distinguished Service Award and a State Award for Contributions to Medicine from the Oklahoma State Medical Association.

With more than 65 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Nettles has been recognized as an emeritus professor with the University of Oklahoma since 2009 and the OU Tulsa Women's Center was named The J. B. Nettles Women's Center in his honor. Prior to this appointment, he served the School of Community Medicine at the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa as a professor from 1980 to 2009 and chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1975 to 1980. Previously, he worked as the professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oklahoma from 1969 to 1978, director of graduate education at Hillcrest Medical Center from 1969 to 1973, assistant professor to professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Arkansas from 1957 to 1969, and instructor to assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois from 1951 to 1957. Dr. Nettles began his career as an intern at Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, from 1944 to 1945 and as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology with the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System from 1947 to 1951.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Nettles pursued an education at the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1941. He concluded his studies in 1944, graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina with a Doctor of Medicine.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Nettles has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has served on the Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education from 1987 to 1992, the Advisory Committee for the AMA's Health Policy Agenda of American People in association with the National Center for Biotechnology Information and National Institutes of Health from 1982 to 1985, and the Southwest Regional Medical Advisory Committee for Planned Parenthood from 1974 to 1978. Dr. Nettles held the positions of director of the Tulsa Obstetrics and Gynecological Education Foundation from 1969 to 1980 and coordinator for the Medical Education for National Defense from 1961 to 1969 at the University of Arkansas. For many years, he was an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In 1945, Dr. Nettles enlisted in the Medical Corps for the United States Naval Reserve, serving on active duty as a Junior Grade Lieutenant until 1946 and as Lieutenant from 1953 to 1954. He also found much success as an author, contributing articles on such topics as uterine malignancy, kidney in pregnancy, perinatal morbidity and mortality, and human sexuality and school-age pregnancy to professional journals.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Nettles has affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has contributed in multiple capacities to the American Medical Association, working on the Governing Council of the Senior Physicians Group from 2003 to 2009, as delegate from American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1987 to 1996, chairman from 1982 to 1996, of the Section Council on Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1975 to 1996. He has also been a member of the American College of Surgeons, serving on the Program Committee from 1970 to 1971, the Board of Governors from 1969 to 1971, the Surgical Forum from 1977 to 1984, and the Advisory Committee on Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1985 to 1992. Likewise, Dr. Nettles worked with the Committee on In-Training Examination in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The executive secretary for the Arkansas Obstetrics and Gynecological Society from 1959 to 1969, Dr. Nettles was involved with The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as district secretary-treasurer from 1964 to 1970, district chairman on the executive board from 1970 to 1973, and as vice president from 1977 to 1978. He was the president of the Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1978 to 1979, where he previously served on the executive committee from 1966 to 1969. He was the president of the Tulsa Chapter Sigma Xi Scientific Society from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Nettles was also the chairman of the Section on Obstetrics of the Southern Medical Association from 1973 to 1974, on the Southwest Regional Board of the American Association of Sex Education Counselors and Therapists from 1976 to 1979, the president of the Southern Gynecological and Obstetrics Society from 1981 to 1982, and on the Governing Board of Examiners of the American College of Nurse Midwives from 1979 to 1983. He also served on the Executive Board of the Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Furthermore, Dr. Nettles has held membership with the International Society for the Advancement of Humanistic Studies in Gynecology, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States of America, the Royal Society of Health, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Tulsa County and Oklahoma State Medical Societies. He has also been involved with the American Association for Maternal and Infant Health, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Public Health Association, and Phi Rho Sigma and Phi Kappa Alpha honor society. Additionally, Dr. Nettles has offered his time, effort and resources to the American Fertility Society and the International Society for General Semantics. He served on the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Committee from 1974 to 1978.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Nettles has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. Honored by Worldwide Branding as an Industry Expert and Distinguished Worldwide Humanitarian in 2018, He was presented with the Ed L. Calhoun Leadership in Organized Medicine Award from the Oklahoma Medical Society in 2004, the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1998, the Young at Heart Award from the Young Physicians Section of the American Medical Association in 1994, the National Teacher Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1992, and the St. George's Medal from the American Cancer Society in 1991. He received the Ten Gallon Blood Donor Award from the American Red Cross.
Earning a District VII Outstanding Clinical Professor Award from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1989, Dr. Nettles further received a National Faculty Award, a Distinguished Service Award, a State Award for Contributions to Medicine, and a Participation in Organized Medicine Award from the Oklahoma State Medical Association. He was a Research Fellow in Pathology of the Medical College of Georgia, now Augusta University, from 1946 to 1947.
