Phyllis Aileen-Donohew Presented with the Albert Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

In the time of a strong feminist movement, Phyllis Aileen-Donohew was the person other women looked to for advice and guidance on how to work their way up in the field.

Dr. Aileen-Donohew has been working as an educational consultant at a private practice in Mount Sterling, Kentucky since 1995. Prior to this appointment, she held the grant administrator position at Pulaski County Schools from 1990 to 1993, and was the co-owner and vice president of R & L Realtors in Sarasota, Florida from 1986 to 1990. She also has experience as a corporate executive and district sales manager, a medicare provider and medical supplies and equipment for the extended care industry, a commercial and industrial chemical specialist, an independent consultant in public relations to various organizations and groups, and general office accounting. Over these corporate years, she freelanced as a professional model from 1972 until 1988.

In addition to these positions, Dr. Aileen-Donohew has spent time as a research assistant to the director of graduate studies at the University of Kentucky College of Education in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1996 to 1999. Before taking on this role, she was a field interviewer at the University of Kentucky Research Center in Lexington and was an adjunct faculty at Midway College. From 1993 to 1995, she was simultaneously a research assistant at the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center and a consultant for development and fund raising at University of Kentucky College of Communications.

Leading up to these impressive roles, Dr. Aileen-Donohew obtained an Associate's Degree from Somerset Community College with high distinction and a Bachelor of Science in communications from the University of Kentucky, where she graduated summa cum ;aude. She continued on at the University of Kentucky to earn a Master of Arts in communications and a PhD in higher education. While she has been a contributor of chapters and books, she is perhaps best known for her role as producer of "Conversations with Lewis Donohew and Colleagues: The History and Development of the University of Kentucky Communications Program" in 2014.

While her professional career has been busy, Dr. Aileen-Donohew has maintained a constant presence in her community. Most recently she volunteered at the Literacy Center in Lexington, Kentucky to teach challenged elementary-aged children how to read and earlier she was an advisory member of the Montgomery County Arts Council from 2004 to 2005 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. She also served as advisor, speaker, and transitional support for Displaced Homemakers from 1991 to 1994. During this time, she was a member of the League of Women's Voters where she collected data in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in preparation for and contribution to the International Women's Conference in Beijing. Prior to this, she was a retreat coordinator and educator at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota, Florida from 1977 to 1982 and a founding team member of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Retreat Series: "Christ Renews His Parish" from 1977 to 1978, and a coach and judge for the National Forensic League in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1963 to 1970 and in Sarasota, Florida from 1978 to 1985.

Dr. Aileen-Donohew has put a lot of energy into the community in a more informal way. She notes that the biggest highlight of her career has been her ability to mentor other women. Dr. Aileen-Donohew has been recognized for her achievements over the years with awards such as the Lyman T. Johnson Graduate Fellowship from the University of Kentucky from 1996 to 1999 and the Commonwealth Scholarship from the University of Kentucky from 1993 to 1995. She has also been presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the Mirror Student Newspaper Faculty Advisor from 1991 to 1993, and a full scholarship to Somerset Community College from 1991to 1993.
