Since 2008, Dr. Menon has been a clinical professor of urology at the University of Toledo, and since 2001, he has been a professor of urology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Beginning in 2008, he spent two years as a clinical professor of urology at New York University. In 1997, Dr. Menon was the Rajendra and Padma Vattikuti chair of oncology and director of the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Health System.
Additionally, he was the professor of physiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center from 1986 to 1997. Overlapping this position, he was the professor of urology and chairman in the division of urology and transplant surgery at the same university from 1983 to 1997. Dr. Menon's first professional role was as assistant professor of urology at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, from 1980 until he accepted a position as associate professor in 1983.
Dr. Menon began his academic pursuits at Madras University, where he earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1971. Following this, he was an intern at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA, from 1973 to 1974. He completed his studies as a resident at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, from 1974 to 1980. In addition, he has a diploma from the American Board of Urology. He was led to the medical path by his mother, and it was his wife who encouraged robotic surgery. Ultimately, it was Dr. Menon's decision to pursue urology.
An active part of the medical community, Dr. Menon is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, the Massachusetts Society of Medical Research, and the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association. Furthermore, he is a member of Researchers on Calculus Kinetics, the American Society of Transplantation and Vascular Surgery, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Urological Association, and the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons.
Other organizations Dr. Menon is a member of include the Endo-urological Society, the Urologic Society for Transplantation and Renal Surgery, and the Indian American Urological Association. He is also a member of the Grandpas Club in Battery Park, NY. He has contributed to the field in many capacities, including contributing more than 300 papers in the fields of robotic surgery, renal transplantation and urolithiasis.

In 2017, Dr. Menon was an honoree of the Society of Scholars at Johns Hopkins University. In 2008, he received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award from the President of India. Other awards given include the Gold Cytoscope and Hugh Hampton Young Awards from the American Urological Association and the Keyes Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. Dr. Menon was the inaugural recipient of the eponymous, Menon Medal.
