Drawing on education at Cornell University and a medical degree from the University of Rochester, Dr. Duvall is celebrated for career-long contributions to the field of medicine. He worked as a primary care physician and medical oncologist at Foxhall Internists from 1968 to 2000. Previous training included as a United States Public Health Service special fellow in hematology and resident in medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, U.S. Public Health Service as lieutenant commander and clinical associate at National Cancer Institute, with prior postgraduate service at University of Rochester and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Oncology, Dr. Duvall also was chairman of the department of medicine at Sibley Memorial Hospital, clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, and emeritus staff at Washington Hospital Center. He was president of Sigma Chi Fraternity's Cornell chapter and in Washington, D.C., president of the Osler Society, Clinico-pathologic Society, and the D.C. Society of Internal Medicine. At the national level, he received its Special Recognition Award of the American Society of Internal Medicine (ASIM) where he then served on the board of trustees, becoming president, speaker of the House of Delegates, and president of the ASIM Socioeconomic Research Foundation. As ASIM's delegate to the American Medical Association, he became chair of AMA's legislative council, the Section Council of Internal Medicine, and the Specialties and Services Society. He was honored by the American College of Physicians with the Outpatient Teaching Award in 1998, Laureate Award in 2000, Honorary President Emeritus of ACP, and Mastership in the College. Contributions can be found in several professional journals and publications. For six years he was chair of the board of Blue Cross-Blue Shield in National Capitol Area.

Dr. Duvall has exhibited considerable civic involvement including volunteering since 2000 as a primary care physician in the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, where he has served on the board of trustees from 2007 to 2009 and as chair of the department of medicine and medical executive committee. He had previously been a member of the Board of Volunteers in Medicine Institute from 2000 to 2003. He has served as chair of Missions Ministry and Prayer Ministry, Deacon, Stephen Minister, and elder at First Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head, SC. He is currently vice-chair of Memory-Matters board of trustees and co-leader of the Men's Support Group. He has received the town Mayor's Citizenship Award in 2003 and the Significant Sig Award from Sigma Chi Fraternity.
