Born on February 5, 1940 to John Barstow Norman and Ruby Maxine Johnson, Professor Norman would become a respected designer, design developer, artist, inventor, author, presenter, and educator.

As a high school student, he was awarded a State Rehabilitation and Kroger Foundation scholarship and also received the 1958 DECA Outstanding Student Award for Missouri. Professor Norman obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1962 and Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1966 from the University of Kansas.

After completing his formal education, Professor Norman began his career as a designer/illustrator. He would remain with the company, Advertising Design, from 1962 to 1964. From 1966 to 1969 he was an art director for Hallmark Cards, Inc., K.C, Mo. Concurrently, he was a consultant designer for the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and illustrator for Harlan Quist Books, New York, Paris, London.

Following his three years with Hallmark, Professor Norman moved on to teach art and design at the University of Denver from 1969 until his retirement in 1994. His art students won many honors and design awards in regional competitions. Most won scholarships to attend the prestigious Aspen International Design Conference. Many students went on to study in graduate schools that offered a master's degree in design.

While teaching at the University, Professor Norman was awarded over 30 gold, silver and honorable mention awards in regional, national and international graphic design competitions. Professor Norman was invited by the Denver Art Museum to co-create a ground breaking, nine-month participatory art experience for the students and citizens of Colorado. The show was titled: "Spaces and Structures." He moved from that project to become the co-director of the state's visual arts component of a week long, music and dance presentations and concerts. The formal art events were held in harmony with participatory dance, music and art experiences. The state art program, held in Denver, was titled: "the Colorado Celebration of the Arts." Professor Norman and his students created participatory sculpture constructs for the Denver Symphony Orchestras (DSO) "On Campus Participatory Music Program". Students and interested citizens could have their musical scores played by the DSO while they listened or participated with the symphony. Outside the campus symphony hall, students and citizens could rearrange elemental art forms into new visual environments. Some pieces were designed to make musical sounds when the breezes moved through them. Professor Norman was selected to co-create a Sol le Witt drawing for the Denver Art Museum. The pencil drawing was part of a traveling national exhibition titled: "Art Since 1945." The exhibit was in concert with the nation's official "Bi-Centennial Celebration". The traveling show was organized by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. Professors Norman and Neff co-created a movie about the Sol le Witt drawing titled: 1111. The NEAH funded movie is in the film collections of the DAM, MOMA and the NEAH.

In the 1980's Professor Norman invented a unique process of designing on fabrics with commercial inks. Soon he was designing banners for a prince in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, local art galleries, the National Endowment of the Arts, the National Geologic Society's 100th anniversary celebration, the Denver Art Museum, the Junior League of Denver, among many others.

Professor Norman won numerous awards with his fabrics and was featured in the Denver Post newspaper, Rocky Mountain News, Surface Design Journal, Mile High Cablevision, and KWGN-TV. In the mid 1980's he began creating one-of-a-kind fashions for women. He was featured in many noteworthy fashion shows and also created swim wear designs for an Italian design group in New York, NY.

After his retirement he designed and developed a catch-and-release fly fishing ranch in South Park, Colorado. One of the ranch's cutbow trout tied the state record and weighed over 22 pounds. While at the ranch Professor Norman co-invented, designed and produced an automatic jigging device and unique rod holder for handicapped fishers. He still has a utility patent on the device. Patent number: 7, 845,106. Professor Norman was elected President of Fishing Science, Inc. that marketed the fishing device in big box stores in the U.S. While living at the ranch he continued creating art work, and exhibited at the Act One Art Gallery in Taos, New Mexico.

Professor Norman recently wrote his first book about his personal experiences titled: "FLASHBACKS: An Artist's Memoir of Alien Abductions, Native Spirits, and Enlightenment." He is currently writing a second book on the same topic and is considered to be a pioneer in proving the existence of UFOs. Professor Norman's book(s) are based on his life experiences with extraterrestrials and Native American spirits. His presentations may be seen on YouTube under his pen name, Sean Bartok. He has also been interviewed on national and international radio podcasts.
