Bette Nelson was named Teacher of the Year in the California League Middle School from 2007 to 2008 and Teacher of the Year in 1984.

From 1989 to 2010, Ms. Nelson was a teacher at Sequoia Middle School in Pleasant Hill, CA. During her time here, she was able to bring 50 eighth grade students from California to Washington, DC, each spring break. While there, she was able to show the students numerous monuments of American history. She considers these trips to be highlights of her career. She also developed the Advanced through Individual Determination (AVID) program for the school.
Prior to this appointment, Ms. Nelson taught reading at Bloomfield Schools in Bloomfield, NJ, from 1987 to 1988. From 1976 to 1984, she taught at the Thomas Jefferson High School in Fairfax, VA. As a teacher and counselor, she served at the Kalamazoo Juvenile Home from 1972 to 1975 and Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, OH, from 1971 to 1972.
Aside from these primary endeavors, Ms. Nelson acted as Gifted and Talented Education (G.A.T.E.) chairman at Mount Diablo Schools from 2004 to 2010. At this school, she helped to develop a reading program for students in the district who were struggling with reading and it ultimately proved to be successful. She considers this to be one of the major achievements of her career.
As a child, Ms. Nelson remembers witnessing her aunt's love for teaching. She would frequently visit her aunt and she saw her as a role model. This sparked in her the idea that she should become a teacher. She grew up in a military officer's family and so she traveled the world and attended 16 schools. After deciding her path, she began her formal academic pursuits.
Ms. Nelson obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history and English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1969. She continued her studies at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, where she received a Master of Arts in counseling in 1971. Furthermore, she became certified as a teacher by the California Department of Education in 1970. One year later, she received a life credential counseling and teaching degree.
Civically, Ms. Nelson has been a member of the vestry team at the Episcopalian Church in Martinez, CA, from 2005 to 2007 and in Clayton, CA, from 1993 to 1997. She served as the stewardship committee head in 1998 and an educator for church youth from 1996 to 2000. On a more personal level, she has written numerous poetry notebooks.
With nearly four decades of experience under her belt, Ms. Nelson maintains her presence in the field as a member of the Retired Teachers Association of California, an associate and member of the National Education Association and a lifetime member of the National Council of Teachers of English, where she served as the vice president from 1980 to 1981. She has held membership with the Philanthropic Educational Organization beginning in 1998 and a lifetime membership with Kappa Delta Pi, and she is a member of the California Teachers Association.
For all of her achievements, Ms. Nelson was named Teacher of the Year in the California League Middle School from 2007 to 2008 and Teacher of the Year in 1984. In 2006, she was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English with the National Honor Roll Outstanding Educator Award.
