With nearly 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Elfenbein was the director of the Adele R. Decof Cancer Center and the blood and marrow transplant program at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1998 to 2004, as well as a professor of medicine at Boston University in Massachusetts from 2000 to 2004. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was director of the bone marrow transplant program at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, from 1989 to 1998, simultaneously serving as a professor of medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, having been an associate professor of medicine, immunology, and medical microbiology from 1981 to 1989. Earlier in his career, Dr. Elfenbein was an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland, from 1977 to 1980 and an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1976 to 1981.

Dr. Elfenbein began his career as a student at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. He subsequently joined Johns Hopkins University, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1970 and serving as a medical intern until 1971. From 1971 to 1973, he was a research associate with the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Immunology, returning to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, as a medical resident from 1973 to 1974 and a medical oncology fellow from 1974 to 1976. Dr. Elfenbein is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Oncology and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Elfenbein has been affiliated with a number of organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including as a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the International Society of Experimental Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Immunologists, and the American Society of Hematology. Dr. Elfenbein has served as a consultant for the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida, and he served with the United States Public Health Service.

Throughout his career, Dr. Elfenbein has been recognized for his contributions, including having won the Giovanni Rosti International Award from the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America.

Additionally, Dr. Elfenbein is incredibly proud of the accomplishments of his two children. His son, Daniel, earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 2004 and his daughter, Johanna, earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2007 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2014.
