Dr. Paul Carpenter has been a clinical professor of medicine at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine since 1998.

With 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Carpenter has been a clinical professor of medicine at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine since 1998, having been associate clinical professor since 1990 and assistant clinical professor since 1982. In addition to his primary roles, he has served as director of cardiovascular training for Avera Heat Hospital since 2006, and an invasive cardiologist for North Central Heart, Ltd., since 1981, having held the same position with the Central Plains Clinic from 1980 to 1981.

Dr. Carpenter began his career as a student at the University of Minnesota, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1968. He then joined the 3M Company as a chemical engineer from 1968 to 1969, and he joined the United States Public Health Service as a chemical engineer from 1970 to 1971. Deciding to pursue a career in medicine, he returned to his studies, earning a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1975. He subsequently held an externship with Southern Baptist Hospital in Ailoun, Jordan in 1975, returning to the University of Minnesota for a residency in internal medicine from 1975 to 1978 and a cardiology fellowship from 1978 to 1980.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Carpenter is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the South Dakota State Medical Association, the Christian Medical Society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Tau Beta Pi. Dr. Carpenter has also been instrumental in the development of the Fool Soldier Scholarship in honor of his great grandfather and his niece, who were rescued by Fool Soldiers.

Throughout his career, Dr. Carpenter has been recognized for his contributions. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
