The recipient of the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, Dr. John H. Ross also received a medal from the College of France and the Presidential National Medal of Science.

With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Ross was recognized as professor emeritus of Stanford University from 2001 until his passing on Feb 18, 2017, having been a professor from 1980 to 2001 and serving as department chair from 1983 to 1989. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a chemistry professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1966 to 1980, also serving as department chair from 1966 to 1971 and faculty chair from 1975 to 1977. Earlier in his career, Dr. Ross was a chemistry professor with Brown University from 1963 to 1966.

Dr. Ross began his career with the United States Army, serving to the rank of second lieutenant from 1944 to 1946. He then pursued an education with Queens College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1948. He concluded his studies in 1951, earning a Doctor of Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Ross also held honorary doctorates from the University of Bordeaux, Queens College, and the Weizmann Institute of Science.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Ross was affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. He was a member of the National Academy of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society, and he was a member of the emeritus board of governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dr. Ross served as a consultant to many institutions in his areas of expertise.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ross was recognized for his achievements. The recipient of the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class, he also received a medal from the College of France and the Presidential National Medal of Science. Dr. Ross has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Ross has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website.
