With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Johnson has been recognized as professor emeritus by East Tennessee State University since 2005, having previously worked as a professor of biology for the academic institution since 1976. In addition to his primary role, he served East Tennessee State University as the chair of biological sciences from 1996 to 2005. From 1982 to 1988, he was an associate professor with East Tennessee State University, where he was an assistant professor from 1976 to 1982. Earlier in his career, Dr. Johnson was an assistant professor with Rice University from 1970 to 1976.

Dr. Johnson began his career as a student at Emory & Henry College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1965. He continued his studies at Michigan State University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology in 1969. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of British Columbia from 1969 to 1970.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Johnson has lent his expertise to a number of organizations, including having contributed several articles to professional journals. He has held the positions of visiting assistant professor of the Kellogg Biological Station, organizing secretary of the International Symposium of Odonatology, and president of the Upper East Tennessee Science Fair. A member of the board of directors of the Zoological Society of Houston, Dr. Johnson has been affiliated with the Ecological Society of America, the North American Benthological Society, Sigma Xi, Beta Beta Beta, Sigma Nu, and Phi Kappa Phi.

Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has been recognized for his contributions. Notably, he is renowned for his research on invertebrate predation, larval dragonfly behavior and ecology, and the ecology of freshwater littoral benthic communities. He was the recipient of several awards, including a Foundation Research Award from East Tennessee State University. Dr. Johnson has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
