Alma Burlingame Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since 1978, Dr. Burlingame has been a professor at the University of California in San Francisco, CA. Concurrent with this appointment, he was a professor at the University College in London, UK from 1996 to 2002. He spent time at the University of California, Berkeley as a research chemist from 1972 to 1978, an associate chemist from 1968 to 1972 and as an assistant professor from 1963 to 1968. He considers one highlight of his career to be his involvement with planning operations for lunar exploration and preliminary analysis of returned lunar samples.

Before earning any degrees, Dr. Burlingame served with the United States Army Reserve from 1954 to 1962. He began his studies at the University of Rhode Island where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1959. While there, he fed his fascination for chemistry and completed his thesis with a young faculty member from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He continued his academics at MIT and ultimately obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.

Dr. Burlingame received an offer from the University of California, Berkeley and worked there for fifteen years before serving the University of California, San Francisco. Aside from his other positions, he was a visiting professor at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in London, UK from 1993 to 1994 and was a university fellow at the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2017.

As a trusted professional in the field, Dr. Burlingame was given the task of editing "Topics in Organic Mass Spectrometry" in 1970, "Mass Spectrometry in Health and Life Science" in 1985, "Biological Mass Spectrometry" in 1990, "Mass Spectrometry in the Biological Science" in 1995 and "Mass Spectrometry in Biology and Medicine" in 2000. He also edited "Biological Mass Spectrometry, Methods in Enzymology" in 2005 and "Mass Spectrometry: Modified Proteins and Glycoconjugates, Methods in Enzymology" in 2005.

Recently, Dr. Burlingame became the editor-in-chief of Molecular and Cellular Proteomics in 2013, where he has been co-editor since 2006 and deputy editor from 2002 to 2006. On top of all of these works, he has contributed additional articles to professional journals over the years. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was a Guggenheim Foundation fellow in 1970.
