James A. Young has been recognized as a fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Newberry Library and the Pennsylvania Labor Studies Center.

Amassing more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Young is a celebrated academic administrator who most recently served as a business agent for the Service Employees International Union from 2001 until his retirement in 2012. Prior to this position, he was the president of TempAide, Inc., from 1996 to 2001, division chair of Central Pennsylvania College from 1998 to 2001, director of the Dislocated Workers Program from 1995 to 1996, and political director and business agent of the Pennsylvania Social Services Union between 1982 and 1995. Previously, he was an assistant, associate and full professor at Edinboro University from 1969 to 1986, a counselor and instructor for AIM-JOB, Inc., from 1967 to 1968, and a history instructor at Cleveland State University and the University of Toledo between 1965 and 1969. Dr. Young commenced his career as an English teacher at Toledo Public Schools from 1964 to 1965.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Young was an adjunct assistant professor of history at Wilson College from 2001 to 2010. Civically, he acted as president of the New Democratic Coalition from 1977 to 1980 and the Harrisburg Regional Labor Council of 1992 to 1996, having also acted on the board of directors of the Erie County Labor Council from 1985 to 1989 and the Private Industry Council from 1992 to 1999. In addition, Dr. Young was a member of the Joint State Government Study Commission on Economy in Government from 1993 to 1994, a delegate and on the board of directors of the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council from 1990 to 2004, and chair of the Dauphin County Democratic Party from 1999 to 2006.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Young pursued formal education at Ohio University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1963. He subsequently attended the University of Toledo, receiving a Master of Arts in history in 1966, and Case Western Reserve University, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1971. He is a certified English teacher in the state of Ohio.

A prolific author, Dr. Young has contributed myriad articles to professional journals within his field and was a contributor to such books as "Doves and Diplomats," "Fear Itself," "Advocates and Activists," and "Morality and the Literary Imagination." He was also the author of "Labor's Story in U.S. History" and "Union Power," published in 2010 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Young maintains affiliation with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Pennsylvania Labor History Society, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the National Writers Union and the American Historical Association, among several others.

As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Young has accrued a plethora of accolades throughout his career. He has been recognized as a fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Newberry Library and the Pennsylvania Labor Studies Center. Dr. Young also earned the John Brennan Award for Outstanding Labor Education from the Pennsylvania Labor History Society in 2004, which he considers to be the highlight of his career.

Married to Susan C. Weader, Dr. Young is the proud father of two daughters, Beth Marie and Rebekah Lynn. A native of Sylvania, OH, he enjoys history, genealogy, writing and gardening in his spare time.
