Dr. Pugh began his career in 1957 as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University where he had earned his PhD in Physics in 1956 and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics in 1951.
In 1958 Dr. Pugh joined IBM as a member of the Research Staff in Poughkeepsie, NY. From 1961 to 1962, he served as a Visiting Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland. Upon his return to Poughkeepsie, he was promoted to Senior Engineer and served as Project Manager in the IBM Components Division from 1962 to 1965. During this time, he and his team developed the Magnetic Thin Film Memories used in the highest performance computers of that time: the IBM System360, Model 95.
From 1966 to 1968, Dr. Pugh was Director of Technical Planning for the IBM Research Division, and from 1969 to 1971 he worked as assistant to the IBM Vice President. From 1971 to 1985, Dr. Pugh worked as a Research Manager in the Research Division. From 1985 to 1993, he was Manager of the IBM Technology History Project.
Dr. Pugh was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1962 and fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1972. At IEEE, he served in many roles, prior to serving as President in 1989. Dr. Pugh also authored IEEE's highly acclaimed, world-wide Code of Ethics.
During the years 2000 through 2004, Dr. Pugh served as president of the IEEE Foundation, and he converted it to an organization that actively raised monies for charitable projects. In his subsequent role as President Emeritus of the IEEE Foundation, he has promoted the worldwide distribution of electricity and its benefits.
In 1974 Dr. Pugh served as the Executive Director of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on "Motor Vehicle Emissions", which had been established at the request of the United States Congress. The Committee's final report was presented to the U.S. Congress on November 27, 1074; and it guided the United States government policies on motor vehicle emissions for many years.
Dr. Pugh was a member of the United Engineering Trustees Board in New York from 1986 to 1992, Trustee of the Samuel Morse Historical Site between 1998 and 1999, and Trustee of the Charles Babbage Foundation from 1990 to 2006.
Dr. Pugh has authored five books, including a best-selling Electrical Engineering text book and four books on the history of computers and the computer industry. Additionally, Dr. Pugh is a distinguished lecturer, holds 10 patents, and has contributed articles to many professional journals.
