Robert T. Stumpff Celebrated for Innovations in Municipal Public Works

Mr. Stumpff recently retired following 50 years of dedication to intercollegiate athletics and facilities management

LAUREL, MD, October 26, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert T. Stumpff is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A dedicated member of the College Park community, Mr. Stumpff recently retired following 50 years of dedication to intercollegiate athletics and facilities management. Although he was most recently recognized as the director of public works, a position he held from 2005 to mid-2018, he initially rose to prominence through his involvement with the University of Maryland. Since joining the university in the 1960s, Mr. Stumpff has held a variety of roles with the institution, beginning with his appointment as an assistant director of athletics shortly after he finished undergraduate education. He went on to serve as a business manager of athletics and acting director of the student union before accepting the position of assistant director for general services in facilities management in 1988.

Mr. Stumpff, born and reared in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland and a certificate from the University of Kentucky. In addition, he has completed training as a certified municipal solid waste manager through the Solid Waste Association of North America.

Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Stumpff has remained committed to improving the speed and efficiency of the tools of his trade. To this end, he was credited with designing the first automated side-loader trash truck with a tag axle in North America to allow a tighter turning radius in 2006, and he was responsible for the first truck built for the City of College Park, Maryland: a Labrie 33cy body on an Autocar chassis. Earlier in his career, Mr. Stumpff designed the first front-end loader trash truck with a tag axle in North America to allow for a larger trash truck with a tighter turning radius in 1997. The first two trucks built for the University of Maryland were a Heil 40cy Halfpack on a Mack MR chassis. Recognized for his work, Mr. Stumpff received calls from Waste Management and BFI inquiring about the new design and requesting access to the design for their future purchase of front-end loader trash trucks.

Since the 1960s, Mr. Stumpff has been featured in a variety of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. However, he takes pride in receiving proclamations from C.D. Mote Jr., former president of the University of Maryland, and Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. of the state of Maryland upon his retirement from the University of Maryland in 2005. Mr. Stumpff was honored for Outstanding Service to the Maryland Municipal Public Works Officials Association by the Maryland Municipal League in 2016. At his retirement luncheon, June 28, 2018, from the City of College Park, he received a Proclamation from Mayor Patrick Wojahn, a citation from Governor Larry Hogan, and a miniature trash truck from the DPW employees, among other awards. Although he is now retired, Mr. Stumpff continues to find satisfaction in his wide range of contributions to the various organizations he has assisted over the years.
