Judge Grimes worked as a partner of Holland and Knight in Bartow, FL, from 1954 to 1973. Following this, he became a judge and chief judge at the Second District Court of Appeals in Lakeland, FL, between 1973 and 1989 and the chairman at the Conference of the Florida District Courts of Appeals from 1978 to 1980. Later on, he became a justice and chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee, FL, between 1987 and 1997. During this time, from 1994 to 1996, he was the chair of the Article V Task Force and the chair of the Workload Study Commission of the U.S. Supreme Court. He also worked as a lawyer for Holland and Knight in Tallahassee from 1987 to 2015.
Judge Grimes began his education as a student at Florida Southern College in Lakeland from 1946 to 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, with honors, from the University of Florida in 1951 and then enlisted as an officer with the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1953. He returned to the University of Florida to obtain a Bachelor of Laws, with honors, in 1954, and was admitted to practice law in the state of Florida and before the Northern and Southern Districts of the District Court of Florida that same year. He went on to become admitted to practice before the Fifth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1965 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972, and he received an honorary doctorate from Stetson University in DeLand, FL, in 1980.
Judge Grimes started in business administration, but the idea of law and order appealed to him. He has fulfilled a number of civic duties in his local community throughout his career and has served as editor-in-chief of the University of Florida Law Review. He has also received a Frederick Clifton Maur Award from the Tallahassee Rotary Club and was presented with a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Florida in 2010. He is listed in the first edition of Who's Who in America: Student Version and several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
