James Randolph Webster Jr. was a three-time recipient of an Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award from Northwestern University Medical School.

Dr. Webster is a professor emeritus of medicine and former Gilbert H. Marquard professor of medicine at Northwestern University Medical School. Retiring in 2013, he taught on campus for 36 years. A practicing physician of more than 40 years as well, he is the former director of the Buehler Center on Aging at Northwestern University, where he spent 12 years between 1980 and 2000. Additionally, he is a former chief executive officer of the Northwestern Medical Group Practice of two years between 1978 and 1980. He was also the chief of medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago from 1976 to 1988.

The former president of the Chicago Board of Health, where he led the project to make Chicago smoke free and reduced gun homicides by approximately 2/3, Dr. Webster also chaired the Illinois Ad Hoc Committee to Defend Health Care. He is the former president and executive director of the Institute of Medicine in Chicago, as well. A longstanding member of several professional organizations, including the American Geriatrics Society and Alpha Omega Alpha, Dr. Webster is a member and former president of the Illinois Geriatrics Society and master member and former governor for Illinois and chair of the sub-committee on aging of the American College of Physicians. He has notably contributed approximately 105 articles to peer-reviewed journals, as well as five chapters to books by other authors.

The recipient of several awards during his tenure, Dr. Webster was a three-time recipient of an Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award from Northwestern University Medical School, received an Alumni Merit Award from Northwestern University in 1979, and from the Feinberg School of Medicine in 2006, Henry P. Russe, MD Citation for Exemplary Compassion in Healthcare in 1997, an Aesculapian Award and a Physician of the Year award from the Anti-Defamation League in 1998, among others. For his time served in the military, Dr. Webster received a Commendation Medal. He has been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.

Earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago-Northwestern University in 1953, followed by an MD, MS in 1956, Dr. Webster then interned at the Philadelphia General Hospital between 1956 and 1957, completed his residency in medicine at Northwestern University between 1957 and 1960 and completed a National Institutes of Health Fellowship in pulmonary disease at Northwestern University between 1962 and 1964. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Army between 1960 and 1962. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in Pulmonary and Geriatric Medicine.
