Charles Cable Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Charles Cable retired in 1995 and has been recognized as professor emeritus of Allegheny College since that time.

Dr. Cable began his career as a math instructor at Interlaken High School from 1954 to 1955. He then served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, returning to his mathematics teaching career at Tidioute High School from 1957 to 1958. After a year of study at the University of North Carolina, from 1958 to 1959, he accepted a position as an assistant professor of mathematics at Juniata College. He remained there teaching and doing graduate work at Pennsylvania State University until 1969. In 1969 he was appointed as an associate professor of mathematics at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He was promoted to full professor of mathematics there in 1975. He was the chair of the mathematics department at Allegheny College from 1970 to 1990. Dr. Cable retired in 1995 and has been recognized as professor emeritus of Allegheny College since that time.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Cable received his Bachelor of Science from Edinboro University in 1954. He earned his Master of Education from the University of North Carolina in 1959. Dr. Cable completed his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1969.

Dr. Cable was an active member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). In this organization, he held the roles of editorial reviewer for Mathematics Magazine from 1975 to 1980 and Associate Editor of Focus from 1981 to 1985. He also authored or co-authored a number of articles in the area of discrete mathematics for professional journals. Dr. Cable is a member of the American Mathematical Society and a member of the American Association of University Professors.

Dr. Cable was elected chairman of the Allegheny Mountain Chapter of the MAA from 1973 to 1975. He also served on various committees and boards of the MAA including the Editorial Committee from 1981 to 1985, the Committee on Student Chapters from 1987 to 1993, and the Publications Committee from 1983 to 1986. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the MAA from 1981 to 1984. In recognition of outstanding service to the MAA, he was awarded the Certificate of Meritorious Service in 2005.

He was awarded a General Electric fellowship in the summer of 1958 and National Science Foundation academic year fellowships for the academic years 1958 to 1959 and 1967 to 1968. Dr. Cable was also awarded National Science Foundation fellowships for the summers of 1961 and 1973 and a fellowship with the national Defense Education Act in 1969. He has been previously selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
