Dr. Conti began his career as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena from 1963 to 1966. After this opportunity, he worked as an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and as an astronomer at the Lick Observatory from 1966 to 1971. From 1971 to 1999, he served as professor and fellow at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics at the University of Colorado Boulder. During this time, he was also chair of the department of astrophysical and planetary sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder from 1980 to 1986 and of the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics from 1989 to 1990. Dr. Conti has been professor emeritus of the University of Colorado Boulder since 1999.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Conti received a Bachelor of Science from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, in 1956. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1963. In 1993, Dr. Conti was awarded an honorary degree from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

In addition to his career, Dr. Conti is co-author of the book "From Luminous Hot Stars to Starburst Galaxies," published in 2008. He is also editor of the books "Mass Loss and Evolution of O-Type Stars," published in 1979, and "O Stars and Wolf-Rayet Stars," published in 1988. From 1998 to 2014, he held the position of receiving editor of New Astronomy Reviews, and since 1996, he has been receiving editor for the journal New Astronomy. Dr. Conti has contributed over 200 articles to professional journals throughout his career.

Dr. Conti served as a junior grade lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve on active duty from 1956 to 1959. From 1983 to 1986, he was chair of the board of directors at the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy in Tucson, AZ. He contributed to Utrecht University as a visiting professor from 1969 to 1970 and as Minnaert professor in 1995. Dr. Conti is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was chair of section D in astronomy in 1980.

Dr. Conti is a member of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the American Astronomical Society, where he acted as counselor from 1983 to 1986. He also belongs to the International Astronomical Union, where he has held a number of positions, including member of the organizing committee of commission 29 stellar spectra from 1983 to 1985, vice president from 1985 to 1988, president from 1988 to 1991. He accepted a fellowship from the Fulbright Scholar Program from 1969 to 1970 and was the recipient of the Gold Medal from the University of Liege in Belgium in 1975. Dr. Conti has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West.
