A highly esteemed and successful statistician and urban transportation planner with more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Sen is currently retired, having most recently served as managing director of TransInfo, LLC, a position he held from 2003 to 2011. Prior to this appointment, he was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the United States Senate as the director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics in the United States Department of Transportation, a post he held from 1998 to 2002.

Dr. Sen graduated with honors from the University of Calcutta in India with a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He continued his studies at the University of Toronto, receiving a Master of Arts in 1964 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. His career began in 1967 as a research associate and lecturer at the Northwestern University Transportation Center. From 1969 to 1978, Dr. Sen was a faculty member of the College of Urban Planning at the University of Illinois. During this time, he also served as dean of the College of Urban Planning from 1977 to 1978, and commenced an appointment as president of Ashish Sen and Associates, which lasted from 1977 to 1998.

Dr. Sen has held several other professional posts throughout his career. From 1978 to 1998, he was as a professor of the College of Urban Planning at the University of Illinois. In 1978, he served as director of the College of Urban Planning and in 1992, he served as acting director. Dr. Sen is also the author of "Regression Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications" and "Gravity Models of Spatial Interaction Behavior," as well as many professional articles.

A fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and American Statistical Association, Dr. Sen is a member of the Regional Science Association, Transportation Research Board, Cliff Dwellers and Indo-American Democratic Organization, of which he was a past president and vice president. Since 2007, he has been president of the South-East Asia Center and was formerly a board member of the Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago Board of Education.

Dr. Sen's professional and civic work has garnered him numerous awards and honors, including the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Federation of Indian Associations in 1991, Appreciation Award from the Asian American Educators Association in 1991 and 1996, Outstanding Community Service Award from the Indo-American Democratic Organization in 2016, Distinguished Service Award from the Indo-American Democratic Organization in 1993, Service Award in Recognition of Outstanding Public Service from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court in 2014, and the Award for Support and Commitment in Developing Intelligent Transportation Systems in Northeast Illinois from the Advance Steering Committee, as well as a number of awards made to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, such as the Secretary's Award for Excellence and Secretary's Team Award. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Sen was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Midwest.
