With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Jacobs has been a Professor of Life Sciences at Arizona State University since 2003, also serving as Vice Provost and Dean of the Honors College. Prior to obtaining his current roles, he was a professor and associate provost at Swarthmore College from 1989 to 2003, having been an associate professor from 1981 to 1989 and an assistant professor from 1975 to 1981. In addition to his primary positions, Dr. Jacobs has served as a visiting professor with the University of Pennsylvania, Cambridge University and the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Dr. Jacobs began his career as a student at Harvard College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1971. He then joined Stanford University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1975. From 1976 to 1977, he served in a postdoctoral fellowship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Freiburg, Germany. Dr. Jacobs is a member of the American Society of Plant Biologists, the Nature Conservancy and Sigma Xi.

A respected leader in his field, Dr. Jacobs has been active with a number of organizations in his community. He has been a member of the Committee of Arts and Sciences of the Franklin Institute, National Treasurer of the American Society of Plant Biologists, and Commissioner and Vice Chair of the Middle States Association's Commission on Higher Education. Dr. Jacobs has also served as a panel member of the National Science Foundation's metabolic biology program, minority graduate fellowships program, and the research experiences for undergraduates program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jacobs has been recognized for his contributions, including having been named endowed chair and centennial professor of biology by Swarthmore College. A Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, he has also been a grantee of the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Jacobs has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
