Catherine Evans Davies, PhD, Celebrates Over 40 Years of Academic Experience



With over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Catherine Evans Davies currently works as a professor of linguistics in the English Department at the University of Alabama.

    TUSCALOOSA, AL, October 31, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Catherine Evans Davies, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Davies currently works as a professor of linguistics in the English Department at the University of Alabama, where she began in 1989. She currently enjoys teaching courses on the history of the English language and variation in American English. At the start of her teaching career in 1968, she taught German and French in the South San Francisco Unified School District. At the beginning of her career in higher education, she served as a visiting assistant professor in the University of Florida's linguistics program.

An alumna of the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and Pomona College, Dr. Davies holds a Bachelor of Arts in German (with a minor in French), a Master of Arts in Foreign Language Education, and a PhD in Linguistics. She maintains memberships in the International Pragmatics Association, the Linguistic Society of America, the Southeastern Conference on Linguistics (SECOL), the American Dialect Society, and the International Society for Humor Studies.

Dr. Davies's research focuses on interactional sociolinguistic approaches to the discourse analysis of humor, cross-cultural communication, second language learning and teaching, Southern American discourse, language and gender, and language in popular culture. She has co-edited two books (New Perspectives on Language Variety in the South: Historical and Contemporary Approaches, Tuscaloosa: The University of Alabama Press. 2015; and English and Ethnicity, New York: Palgrave Macmillan (Signs of Race Series). 2006). She has also published over 40 scholarly works in the form of journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. She has presented her work at over 100 conferences over the course of her career, more than 20 of which were international. She is currently working on two book projects concerning her work on humor and on Southern discourse.

Dr. Davies is particularly happy to be included in Marquis Who's Who because her father, Daniel R. Davies, was included, and she knows that he would be very proud.
