The bulk of Dr. McKinsey's career has been working at Wayne State University. He was a professor from 1991 to 2018, a director of graduate studies in 2012, the philosophy department chair in 2011 and from 1987 to 1991, an associate professor from 1982 to 1991, and an assistant professor of philosophy from 1976 to 1982. His first professional position was as a philosophy instructor at Ohio University in Chillicothe, OH, from 1972 to 1975. Classes he currently teaches or has taught in the past include: Critical Thinking, Advanced Symbolic Logic, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Language.

Additionally, Dr. McKinsey was a visiting philosopher and guest lecturer at the University of Stockholm in 2006 and a Benjamin Meaker visiting professor at the University of Bristol in 1998. He also spent time at the University of Oxford from 1998 to 1999 and Lomonosov Moscow State University from 1991 to 1992. Of all the accomplishments of this impressive career, he is now most proud of his more than thirty publications on fundamental problems in his specialties, the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind. His research is in the Philosophy of Language and has primarily concerned the semantics of natural language, especially the meaning and reference of proper names, indexical and anaphoric pronouns, natural kind terms, and the meaning and logical form of cognitive ascriptions. He is also very interested in the relevance of these topics to traditional metaphysical questions in the Philosophy of Mind, including the nature of cognitive properties and the mind/body problem, as well as to issues in the Philosophy of Logic, including the nature of logical truth and valid inference.

Dr. McKinsey's academic pursuits began at Southern Methodist University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. It was the philosophy classes he took there and the compliments he received from professors that brought him toward philosophy. He continued his studies at Kansas State University, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 1966, and ultimately graduated from Indiana University with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.

Now, Dr. McKinsey is an established professional and holds membership in such organizations as the American Association of University Professors and the American Philosophical Association. Additionally, he won the National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Stipend Award in 1980. He was also an American Council of Learned Studies fellow from 1982 to 1983 and a Fulbright grantee from 1991 to 1992. Dr. McKinsey has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest.
