Donald Bogard has been eponymously honored with a Namesake Asteroid, now called 4794 Bogard.

Dr. Bogard began his career as a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 1966 to 1968. After this appointment, he worked as a senior staff scientist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas from 1968 to 2010. He concluded his career as a heritage fellow of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas from 2010 to 2013. Dr. Bogard considers the highlight of his career to be when he discovered Martian atmospheric gas inside an Antarctic meteorite he was studying, as this discovery sparked a considerable amount of research into the geochemical nature of Mars.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Bogard received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arkansas in 1962. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Science from the University of Arkansas in 1964. In 1966, Dr. Bogard obtained a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Arkansas.

In addition to his career, Dr. Bogard served the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as an Antarctic meteorite curator from 1978 to 1984 and as a discipline scientist within the planetary program from 1984 to 1992. He has also contributed over 150 articles for professional journals. Notably, Dr. Bogard was featured with a presentation in the "Oral Histories in Meteorites and Planetary Science" report series, published in Meteorite & Planetary Science in 2012.

Dr. Bogard was a member of the American Geophysical Union and a fellow of the Meteoritical Society, where he held the position of secretary from 1980 to 1986. He was presented with the NASA Exceptional Science Achievement Medal in 1983, the Leonard Medal from the Meteoritical Society in 2002 and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2010. He has also been eponymously honored with a Namesake Asteroid, now called 4794 Bogard. Dr. Bogard has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
