VESTAL, NY, November 06, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Sandra D. Michael with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Michael celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For over four decades, Dr. Michael has been employed in numerous roles at Binghamton University, initially holding the post of an assistant professor from 1974 to 1981. Following this appointment, she served Binghamton University as an associate professor from 1981 to 1988, a professor of reproductive endocrinology from 1988 to 2005, department chair from 1992 to 2000 and director of graduate studies from 2004 to 2010. In 2005, she was promoted to SUNY distinguished service professor. She has been the principal advisor for over 50 MA, MS and PhD students.

Prior to taking on these positions, Dr. Michael worked at the University of California, Davis, where she was an assistant research geneticist from 1973 to 1974. She also obtained predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships at the university through the National Institutes of Health from 1967 to 1970 and 1970 to 1973, respectively. She also earned a fellowship as the Fulbright Senior Scholar to the Czech Republic in 1994, an endeavor she considers to be one of the highlights of her career. She has held visiting professorships at Charles University (Prague), Nagoya University (Japan), and University of East Anglia (England).

Dr. Michael was passionate about many areas of study as a student. She pursued academics at Sonoma State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and was valedictorian. She changed her major multiple times, eventually settling on biology as the focus of her education. She concluded her studies at the University of California, Davis, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics, 1970.

She has had a broad spectrum of scholarly interests in the genetics, immunology and endocrinology of reproduction. While she has studied various aspects of reproduction in both male and female models, her work was instrumental in establishing a critical link between the thymus gland and the ovaries. This fundamental research has been invaluable for further studies in the autoimmune etiology of premature ovarian failure, ovarian cancer and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Aside from these primary endeavors, Dr. Michael excelled as an adjunct professor in the department of obstetrics-gynecology at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and its Binghamton Clinical Campus. From 1991 to 1995, she was a member of the Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health. She also served as a consultant, presenter in the field and grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, among others.

Now, Dr. Michael is an accomplished professional who has contributed to numerous esteemed journals. She is a founding member of the editorial board for Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology and also served on that of the American Journal of Reproductive Immunology. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2001.

Local or regional biomedical board of directors include: Guthrie Research Institute, Clinical Campus Research Committee, the Achieve Foundation (secretary), and Lourdes Hospital quality committee. Additionally, she was a member of Rotary International and has been a member of the Binghamton Forum since 1987.

In 1999, Dr. Michael was appointed to the AAAS—Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion (DoSER) Advisory Board. DoSER facilitates communication between scientific and religious communities. Her appointment initiated continuing involvement in the important national dialogue. She is former convener of the national Episcopal Church's Network for Science, Technology and Faith, and former member of the related Executive Council STF Committee. She is also co-author of A Catechism of Creation: An Episcopal Understanding (2005), and she helped develop a 2006 Episcopal Church General Convention resolution that embraces an evolutionary outlook compatible with faith. She is an associate member of the Society of Ordained Scientists (SoSc) and regularly participates in the world-wide, multi-faith Evolution Weekend by providing sermons and workshops around the USA. These events help demonstrate that sound science poses no threat for faith.
