For many years, Dr. Felstiner served as a history professor with San Francisco State University. An expert in numerous fields, she created and taught unprecedented courses in comparative women's history, the history of genocide, Latin American history and creative resistance in history. During the early years of her career, Dr. Felstiner was invited to give a lecture as part of the Last Lecture series, which would invite young and incoming university faculty to give a lecture as if it was their final lecture before retirement.
After pondering for a while about the message she wanted to convey, Dr. Felstiner decided to give her lecture on the fairly unknown German Jewish artist, Charlotte Salomon. The response to the lecture was such that it led her to spend the next 12 years of her life researching the artist and studying the history of genocide and Nazi Germany. Over the years, Dr. Felstiner also gained valuable expertise as a visiting professor for Stanford University in California and as a visiting scholar at the Stanford Center for Research on Women.
In the early-1960s, Dr. Felstiner began her studies with a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Following this accomplishment, she completed a Master of Arts at Columbia University in New York City and a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University. Utilizing the knowledge she has gained over the years, Dr. Felstiner has authored two books, "To Paint Her Life: Charlotte Salomon in the Nazi Era," the culmination of her many years of academic research, and "Out of Joint: A Public and Private Story of Arthritis," her personal story of living with arthritis.
For her outstanding accomplishments, Dr. Felstiner has been honored many times, winning the American Historical Association's Joan Kelly Memorial Prize in Women's History, the Sierra Book Prize through the Western Association of Women Historians and the Hubert Herring Award in Latin American Studies. She has been additionally honored in such professional publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women. In the near future, Dr. Felstiner intends to continue parlaying her knowledge to others in the field.
