Teaching at Stockton University since 1972, Dr. Sharon was a professor of physics from 1976 to 2017. He has been a Weinstein professor of Jewish studies there since 2008 and a distinguished professor of physics since 2017. During his career at the university, he also served as a trustee fellow in sciences from 2000 to 2001. Prior to joining the Stockton faculty, he taught as an assistant professor at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, for six years between 1966 and 1972, and was an assistant in the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, NJ, between 1965 and 1966. While pursuing his undergraduate and graduate studies, he also worked as a teaching assistant at Columbia University and at Princeton University.
Dr. Sharon's love of teaching developed while working as a teaching assistant. He especially enjoys teaching and also doing research in theoretical nuclear physics, as well as teaching non-science majors because he gets the opportunity to demonstrate to them just how important and useful science is. In addition to his teachings at Stockton, Dr. Sharon has been serving as a longtime visiting scholar, visiting professor, visiting scientist and consultant at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, since 1995. He formerly served as a visiting professor at Temple University and the University of Montreal, was a visiting fellow at Princeton University, and was a summer physicist at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. Notably, Dr. Sharon has contributed multiple articles to scholarly journals in his area of expertise during his tenure in academia.
Recently honored to serve as a co-presenter with Rabbi Robert Wolkoff of a dialogue on science and religion at Congregation B'nai Tikvah in North Brunswick, NJ, in February 2017, Dr. Sharon was also the keynote speaker at the community-wide Israel Independence Day Program in May 2017, which was organized by the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Atlantic and Cape May Counties and held at the Shirat Hayam Synagogue in Ventnor, NJ.
A longstanding member of the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Sharon is also a New Jersey Section executive board member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, where he received a New Jersey Section Lifetime Contribution to Physics Education Award in 2005. A grant recipient from the National Science Foundation, the New Jersey Department of Higher Education and the Center for Theology and Natural Sciences, he was named Faculty Member of the Year in the Sciences at Stockton University multiple times. He has been highlighted in more than 40 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Dr. Sharon later immigrated to the United States in 1948. He since earned a Bachelor of Arts, with highest honors, at Columbia University in 1958, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in physics at Princeton University in 1960 and 1966, respectively. Dr. Sharon has been married to Sandra Lynn Brook Sharon since January 13, 1991. They have a daughter Dina Avrahama Sharon.
