Dean E. Arnold Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Arnold began his career as a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois from 1965 to 1966. After this opportunity he served an assistant professor at the Pennsylvania State University from 1969 to 1972. Following this appointment, he was a Fulbright lecturer and visiting professor of anthropology at the National University of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Cuzco from 1972 to 1973. He held the position of assistant professor of Wheaton College from 1973 to 1977, where he later worked as associate professor from 1977 to 1982. Dr. Arnold maintained association with Wheaton College from 1982 to 2012 as a full professor. Dr. Arnold was a visiting scholar in the department of archaeology at the University of Cambridge in 1985, 1992 and 2000.

In addition to his career, Dr. Arnold has been research associate at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois from 1988 to 1990 and from 1993 to 2011. He has been an adjunct curator at the Field Museum since 2011. He was also chair of the department of sociology and anthropology at Wheaton College from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Arnold has been involved in a number of field work expeditions including those to Mexico, Colorado, Peru, Guatemala and Bolivia.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Arnold received his Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Wheaton College in 1964. He earned his Master of Arts in anthropology from the University of Illinois in 1967. Dr. Arnold concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology from the University of Illinois.

Dr. Arnold is a frequent contributor of articles to professional journals and edited collections. Some of his articles include "Ancient Andean Ceramic Technology: An Ethnoarchaeological Perspective" in "Andean Ceramics: Technology, Organization and Approaches" in 1998, "Linking Society with the Compositional Analyses of Pottery: A Model from Comparative Ethnography" in Pottery Manufacturing Processes: Reconstruction and Interpretation and "'Ceramic Theory and Cultural Process' after 25 Years" in Ethnoarchaeology in 2011, to name a few. He is also author of a number of books, including "Ceramic Theory and Cultural Process" in 1985, "Ecology of Ceramic Production in an Andean Community" in 1993 and "The Evolution of Ceramic Production Organization in a Maya Community" in 2015, among others. Dr. Arnold's book "Ceramics of Ancient America: Multidisciplinary Approaches" was published in September 2018.

Dr. Arnold held a position on the editorial board of Studia Vasorum from 2002 to 2004 and Latin American Antiquity from 2010 to 2013. He is a member of the American Anthropological Association, the Society for American Archaeology, Sigma Xi, the Fulbright Alumni Association and the Institute of Andean Studies. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was elected as a fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation in 2008. He is also an associate of Current Anthropology and a lifetime member of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge in England. Additionally, Dr. Arnold has been a participant in a number of academic conferences including the Society for American Archaeology Annual Meetings and the American Anthropological Association Meetings.

Dr. Arnold received the National Defense Foreign Language fellowship from 1966 to 1969, and in 1969, accepted Fourth Prize in the Sigma Xi Student Paper Competition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 1984, he was a Fulbright Scholar in Mexico and a recipient of the American Republics Research Grant. He was presented with the Award for Excellence in Ceramics Studies by the Society for American Archaeology in 1996 and the Senior Scholarship Achievement Award from Wheaton College, Illinois in 2001.

In 2003, Dr. Arnold was awarded the Charles R. Jenkins Certificate of Distinguished Achievement by the National Executive Council of Lambda Alpha, and in 2008, he was recipient of the Distinguished Service to Alma Mater Award from the Wheaton College Alumni Association. He was a High Table Member of Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge in 2000 and was recognized as a Distinguished Member of the American Anthropological Association in 2017. Dr. Arnold has previously been selected for inclusion in the 1st edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America and multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.
