Mr. Goode is an American composer and clarinetist who retired as a professor emeritus at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 1998. Rising from the rank of assistant to associate professor in 1971, he devoted 27 years to Rutgers as the director of the electronic music studio between 1971 and 1998. Furthermore, Mr. Goode excelled as a former research assistant at the University of California at San Diego, the music director at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, an instructor at the University of Minnesota and an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota.
As a musician proficient in the technique of circular breathing, Mr. Goode's works have been influenced by bird song, Cape Breton fiddling, drone, Indonesian gamelan music and minimal music, often with two or more of these elements combined in a single composition. Composing music before the age of 10, he took private clarinet lessons and participated in numerous ensembles at his high school. He didn't compose again, however, until he was out of college. Some of Mr. Goode's works have included including "Tunnel-Funnel" in 1998, "Clarinet Songs" in 1993, and "Annbling" in 2014, among many others.
In 1983, Mr. Goode founded and served as the co-director of the DownTown Ensemble in New York City. In 2003, he began serving as the founding director of Flexible Orchestra. A reform of the Western orchestra, the Flexible Orchestra has played at such locations as the Roulette in Brooklyn and the Ukrainian Restaurant Ballroom in Manhattan. He has also been a founding member of the Gamelan Son of Lion since 1976, for which he has composed many works here and served on the board of directors. Furthermore, Mr. Goode served as a music advisor and director for Take Back the Future in New York City from 2002 to 2003 as well as a panelist for Political Art Today.
Mr. Goode has studied philosophy, followed by music under the guidance of Henry Cowell, Otto Luening, Pauline Oliveros and Kenneth Gaburo. He has previously obtained a Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and Master's degree from Columbia University. Upon earning his degrees, Mr. Goode completed two years of service in the United States Naval Reserve between 1961 and 1963.
Responsible for the development of a special, keyless clarinet made from a length of plastic pipe, the clarinet allows Mr. Goode to play in the Indonesian slendro tuning system. He has been presented with a Music Composition Award from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1982, and became a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in 2004. He has also received a grant from the Trust for Mutual Understanding in 2002. Notably, Mr. Goode has been cited in the 59th edition of Who's Who in America in 2005.
