Mary K. Knechtges has been recognized for her contributions, including having been named Coach of the Year by Macomb County Coaches.

With more than 35 years of professional experience, Ms. Knechtges was an educator with L'Anse Creuse High School in Harrison Township, Michigan, from 1967 to 2003. In addition to her primary role, she served the school in a variety of capacities, including as basketball coach from 1968 to 1980 and again from 1990 to 2003, softball coach from 1976 to 1978, and cheerleading coach from 1968 to 1976. Ms. Knechtges was also a basketball coach with Bishop Gallagher High School, now closed, from 1981 to 1983 and an assistant basketball coach for the University of Michigan-Dearborn in Dearborn, MI, from 1985 to 1987.

Ms. Knechtges began her career as a student at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1967. She continued her studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, completing postgraduate work from 1968 to 1970. A member of the National Education Association, she has been affiliated with the Michigan Education Association and the L'Anse Creuse Education Association. Ms. Knechtges was active on the Clinton Township youth service committee from 1973 to 1975.

A respected voice in her community, Ms. Knechtges has held several leadership positions with organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a state representative for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, regional chair of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, and a district representative of the Michigan High School Coaches Association. Ms. Knechtges was a volleyball official and on the committees for officials, summer basketball, and women in leadership for the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Throughout her career, Ms. Knechtges has been recognized for her contributions, including having been named Coach of the Year by Macomb County Coaches. Moreover, the basketball court at L'Anse Creuse High School was named "Coach K's Court" in honor of her in 2003. The Detroit Free Press named her Michigan Coach of the Year, the National High School Coaches Association named her District Four Coach of the Year, and the United Foundation nominated her as Sportswoman of the Year. She has been inducted to the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Midview Athletic Hall of Fame in Grafton, Ohio. Ms. Knechtges has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women, and the 17th edition of Who's Who in the World.
