Christina Maslach, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since 2013, Dr. Christina Maslach has been professor emeritus of psychology and professor of the graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Maslach began her career as a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1971 until 2013. During her time at the University of California, Berkeley, she served as faculty assistant on the Status of Women from 1994 to 1997. She was also chair of the Academic Senate in 2000 and again from 2012 to 2013. She was vice provost for undergraduate education and instructional technology from 2001 to 2009. Since 2013, Dr. Maslach has been professor emeritus of psychology and professor of the graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley.

In addition to her career, Dr. Maslach was president of the Western Psychological Association from 1988 to 1989. Since 1988, she has been on the board of directors for CPP, Inc. She also served as commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges from 2003 to 2008. From 2003 to 2017, she was on the board of trustees for the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. She has now been elected a second time to be president of the Western Psychological Association, in the year 2020 when the WPA will be celebrating its centennial. Additionally, she is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology, the International Association of Applied Psychology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Prior to embarking on her career, Dr. Maslach received a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College in 1967. Following this achievement, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1971. In 2016, Dr. Maslach was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Valparaiso in Chile.

Dr. Maslach has been author and co-author of several books including "Influencing Attitudes and Changing Behavior" in 1977, "The Maslach Burnout Inventory" in 1981, which received updated editions in 1986, 1996 and 2017, "Burnout: The Cost of Caring" in 1982, "The Truth About Burnout: How Organizations Cause Personal Stress and What to Do About It" in 1997, "Preventing Burnout and Building Engagement" in 2000 and "Banishing Burnout: Six Strategies for Improving Your Relationship with Work" in 2005. She has also been co-editor of "Professional Burnout: Recent Developments in Theory and Research" in 1993, all four editions of "Experiencing Social Psychology" in 2001, and "Burnout at Work: A Psychological Perspective" in 2014. Dr. Maslach was additionally the founder and co-editor-in-chief of the academic journal Burnout Research from 2014 to 2017.

In 1980, Dr. Maslach received the Henry Guze Research Award from the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Following this achievement, she was recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987 and the Best Paper Award from the Journal of Organizational Behavior in 1994. In 1997, she was named USA Professor of Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and in 2001, she received the Outstanding Mentorship of Graduate Student Instructors Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Maslach was awarded the Berkeley Citation from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2009.

In 2010, Dr. Maslach was honored with the Berkeley Faculty Service Award from the University of California, Berkeley, and in 2013, she was recipient of the Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Work Stress and Health International Conference. She was also presented with the Application of Personality and Social Psychology Award by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in 2017 and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Western Psychological Association in 2018. Dr. Maslach has previously been selected for inclusion in the third edition of Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals and multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
