Originally from Grosseto, Italy, Dr. Mannelli is working as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He began his professional career as a resident at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome from 1986 to 1990, during which time he was also a Research Fellow of the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, for one year. Following this appointment, he became an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore for 12 years and moved to the United States in 2000, where he worked as a Research Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, for the next four years.
Dr. Mannelli graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Medical School. He is certified by the Italian Board of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. His area of expertise is the study and treatment of substance use disorder and comorbid conditions: in his career he has contributed well over 100 scientific articles and book chapters, and over 500 presentations at national and international conferences. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for many scientific journals in psychiatry and drug addiction and is editor/editorial board member of several professional journals. He was named Best Reviewer by Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety and has been repeatedly dubbed Outstanding Reviewer by Drug and Alcohol Dependence. He has also devoted time to community service and has helped families and children in need.
Dr. Mannelli was awarded a Rotary Foundation International Scholarship in 1988 and was named a Future Leader in Drug Addiction by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction of the European Union in 1996. Years later, he was inducted into the Duke PREMIER (Partnership of Excellence in Mental Health Interventions Education and Research), was named America's Leading Expert on Substance Withdrawal, and was invited to be part of the International Association of Healthcare Professionals "The Leading Physicians of the World".
