Dr. Willard Gregory Nelson Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A highly esteemed veterinarian and administrator with more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Nelson is currently retired, having most recently served as director of public affairs for the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation from 1995 until 2004. Prior to this appointment, he worked as Administrator State Veterinarian for the Idaho Division of Animal Industries from 1981 to 1990 and as Director of the Idaho State Department of Agriculture from 1990 to 1995.

Dr. Nelson earned a Bachelor of Science from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1959 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Washington State University in Pullman in 1961. He was licensed as a veterinarian by the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana and began his career in private practice in 1963. Three years later, he was appointed Assistant to the Director of the Idaho State Department of Agriculture. From 1978 to 1980, Dr. Nelson worked for the Idaho Bureau of Animal Health, progressing from Assistant Chief to Chief.

Following his service as a captain in the United States Army Veterinary Corps from 1961 to 1963, Dr. Nelson was the Veterinarian in Charge at Fort Myer in Virginia from 1963 to 1964, and was responsible for the health and well-being of the Army's ceremonial horses. He later joined the Idaho Army National Guard, serving as Lieutenant Colonel from 1979 to 1988 and Colonel from 1988 to 1997. Dr. Nelson was awarded the Legion of Merit and promoted to Brigadier Ceneral by the Idaho National Guard.

Dr. Nelson held the positions of Director of Leadership Idaho Agriculture from 1994 to 1995 and of chairman of the Idaho Governor's Human and Animal Health Consortium from 1983 to 1990. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Southwest Idaho Veterinary Medical Association, the United States Animal Health Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Western States Livestock Association. Dr. Nelson also belongs to the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association, where he has previously acted as president.

Outside of his career responsibilities, Dr. Nelson dedicates his time and efforts to a number of civic organizations and causes. He has served as both a Councilman and Mayor of the city of Kuna, Idaho. Dr. Nelson has been a member of numerous local organizations including the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association, the Idaho State Emergency Response Commission and the Idaho Rural Development Council, among others.

Dr. Nelson was awarded the Idaho Veterinarian of the Year Award by the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association in 1989 and the Outstanding Service Award by Washington State University in 2001. He was even given the honor of caring for President John F. Kennedy's horses, including Jacqueline Kennedy's horse Sardar, a gift from the president of Pakistan, and Caroline Kennedy's pony Macaroni. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Nelson was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
