Richard Leo Lanigan Jr., Ph.D. has served as the director and fellow of the International Communicology Institute in Washington, DC, for the last 18 years.

An expert in many disciplines such as communicology, philosophy, semiotics, sociology and anthropology, Dr. Lanigan has served as the director and fellow of the International Communicology Institute in Washington, DC, for the last 18 years. He began his career as a research associate in the joint postgraduate program in philosophy at Dundee University and St. Andrews University in Scotland in 1970, remaining there for two years and later becoming the founding chair of the philosophy communications division of the International Communications Association in Berlin in 1977. Upon returning to the United States, he became a research associate at the East-West Center in Honolulu, HI, for one year and then received two consecutive Andrew Mellon Fellowships in linguistics and philosophy from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He briefly served as a research associate at the University of California, Berkeley, and president of the Semiotic Society of America, and has since been an editor for the American Journal of Semiotics and a fellow of the International Academy for Intercultural Research.

Dr. Lanigan attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and a Master of Arts in 1968. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in communicology from Southern Illinois University by the age of 25, and became a Senior Fulbright Fellow at Sichuan University in China in 1996. During this time, he served as the Southern Illinois University chapter president of the American Association of University Professors for three years, has authored five books on the topic of communicology, and has served on 30 editorial boards for professional journals. He has also served as the vice president of the International Association of Semiotic Studies and has been affiliated with many other organizations in his field, such as the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association and the American Philosophical Association, among others.

For his accomplishments in his field, Dr. Lanigan was awarded a scholar award from the National Communications Association in 1995. He was named a Fellow of the Polish Academy of Science and was honored with an Outstanding Philosophy of Communication Award from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. He is listed in nine editions of Who's Who in America.
