Alvin Poussaint Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Alvin Poussaint has spent many years of his career at Harvard Medical School, holding such positions as psychiatry professor since 2000 and clinical professor of psychiatry since 1993.

As an established professional, Dr. Poussaint has spent many years of his career at Harvard Medical School, holding such positions as psychiatry professor since 2000 and clinical professor of psychiatry since 1993. He also served this academic establishment as dean of students from 1975 to 1978, an associate professor of psychiatry, and associate dean of students from 1969 to 1975 and in 1978. From 1966 to 1969, he was an assistant professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine.

From 1965 to 1966, Dr. Poussaint was a southern field director of the Medical Committee of Human Rights in Jackson, MS. He considers these two years to be the highlight of his career, as it gave him tremendous insight, perspective and new courage. His ambition changed from this moment to be more civil rights oriented.

At the UCLA Center for Health Sciences, Dr. Poussaint was a chief resident from 1964 to 1965, a resident of psychiatry in the Neuropsychiatric Institute from 1961 to 1964 and an intern from 1960 to 1961. Aside from these primary endeavors, he was a consultant for the Department of Health from 1969 to 1973 and the head of the media center for the Judge Baker Children's Center from 1994 to 2010.

Dr. Poussaint's academic pursuits began at Columbia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. He continued his studies at Cornell University, where he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in 1960. Ultimately, he received a Master of Science from UCLA in 1964.

Now, Dr. Poussaint is not only an accomplished professional, but he has also authored numerous articles in the field. He was the national treasurer of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters from 1969 to 1970 and treasurer of the Medical Committee of Human Rights from 1966 to 1967. Additionally, he is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, member of the National Medical Association and a Life member of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry. Additionally, he was a member of the committee on Black Psychiatrists from 1970 to 1975, is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

For all of his achievements over the years, Dr. Poussaint was the recipient of the Michael Schwerner Award in 1968, the American Black Achievement Award in Business and the Professions from the Johnson Publishing Company Inc. in 1986, and the John Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement from Columbia College in New York, NY in 1987. He also received the Medgar Evers Medal of Honor from the Beverly Hills Hollywood chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1988. Dr. Poussaint further accrued numerous honorary degrees.
