Garland Hershey Jr. with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hershey celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Since 2000, Dr. Hershey has served as the vice chancellor emeritus for health affairs at the University of North Carolina. Since 1978, he has also been a professor in the department of orthodontics at the School of Dentistry and in the department of health policy and management at the same university. Additionally, he has been practicing Orthodontics beginning in 1971. Other roles at the University of North Carolina include vice provost from 1988 to 1999, vice chancellor from 1983 to 1999, and interim provost from 1992 to 1993. At the university's School of Dentistry, he acted as the associate dean from 1980 to 1983, the director of graduate education from 1975 to 1983 and the assistant dean of academic affairs from 1975 to 1980. Furthermore, he was an associate professor at the university from 1974 to 1978 and an assistant professor in the department of orthodontics from 1971 to 1974.

Before holding these positions, Dr. Hershey worked at the University of Iowa department of orthodontics. There, he served as an assistant instructor from 1970 to 1971 and a staff research assistant from 1969 to 1971. His first professional post was at the University of Iowa Department of Oral Diagnosis from 1968 to 1969. Aside from these primary endeavors, he has been involved with the Research Triangle Institute on the executive committee and the board of governors. He has been on the North Carolina Orthodontic Health Care Committee beginning in 1974 and a staff member of the North Carolina Memorial Hospital beginning in 1973.

From 1980 to 2000, Dr. Hershey held the role of consultant of dental health at the University of Alexandria in the Arab Republic of Egypt. He was on the board of directors at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital and a site visit consultant of public health, dentistry, graduate medical education, psychology, athletics and optometry. He has accepted fellowships with the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry International. He also served the American Board of Orthodontics as an examiner.

Dr. Hershey was encouraged by his mentors to pursue this career. He began his academic pursuits at Grinnell College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1961. His college roommate was studying dentistry and after researching the field, Dr. Hershey decided he would like to study it as well. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa where he received a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1965. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1968 as a Captain. Ultimately, he returned to the University of Iowa and earned a Master of Science in 1971. Beyond these accomplishments, he also completed a residency in orthodontics and is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics with the International Association of Dental Research.

An active member of the community, Dr. Hershey has been on the board of trustees at Preservation Chapel Hill and on the governing board at the Association of Psychology Post-Doctoral and Internship Centers since 2015. Beginning in 2014, he has been the chair of the orthodontic review committee and a member of the commission on dental accreditation at the American Dental Association since 2014. With the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies, he has been on the executive committee and on the board of directors. Additionally, he has been involved with the North Carolina Memorial Hospital beginning in 1983.

From 2014 to 2017, Dr. Hershey was on the executive committee of the commission on accreditation with the American Psychological Association, which he had been involved with beginning in 2011. In 1995, he served as the vice chair of the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies. From 1983 to 1985, he was the vice chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission at Chapel-Hill Carrboro where he had been involved from 1980 to 1985. Additionally, he held the role of president of the Chapel-Hill Carrboro United Way from 1980 to 1981 and was on the board of directors from 1979 to 1982.

An accomplished professional, Dr. Hershey has been on the editorial review board of the American Journal of Orthodontics since 1986, the Clinical Preventive Dentistry in 1980 and the Journal of Dental Education from 1979 to 1982. As an editorial consultant, he served the Journal of the American Dental Association in 1975 and the American Journal of Physical Anthropology from 1974 to 1980. He also spent time as a consulting editor with the American Journal of Orthodontics in 1980, the Dental Student Journal in 1978, and the Southern Society of Orthodontists in 1976. In addition to serving on the editorial board of Angle Orthodontists, he is a contributor of articles to professional journals.

Aside from these endeavors, Dr. Hershey dedicates time to memberships in numerous prestigious organizations. He has been on the board of directors for the Association of the Academic Health Centers, a consultant of the council on dental education at the American Dental Association since 1978 and a chairman of manpower evaluation at the North Carolina Orthodontic Society. He acted as the chair-elect of the Association of Academic Health Centers in 1995 until he took the role of chair in 1996. With the Section on Orthodontics and Oral Development of the American Dental Association, he was the chairman from 1979 to 1980 and vice chairman from 1978 to 1979.

Other memberships Dr. Hershey holds include with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Public Health Association, the North Carolina State Dental Society, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the Durham-Orange Dental Society. He spent time on the education committee of the Southern Society of Orthodontists. He also serves as a member of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the International Association of Dentofacial Abnormalities, the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontics, the Charles H. Tweed Foundation, and the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Hershey is a member of the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Society, the Order of the Golden Fleece, Delta Sigma Delta, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and Sigma Xi. He was also on the board of directors with the Research Triangle Institute. He considers his involvement in organizations, civic work, and dentistry, among other things, to be important components of his career.

For his many achievements in his field, Dr. Hershey has been recognized with several awards. He received the Dale Wade Award from the American Board of Orthodontics in 2011 and was named Pioneer of the Specialty by the Southern Association of Orthodontics in 2009. He also earned the Arthur Weurhmann Prize from the American Academy of Oral and Maxillo Facial Radiology in 2007 and the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in 1996. In addition to the University of Iowa honoring him with the Distinguished Alumni Award and Hickerson Award in 2010 and the Alumni Award in 2000, he is the recurrent recipient of Teaching Awards in Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Dr. Hershey enjoys gardening and skiing in his free time in addition to watching numerous spectator sports. He is the proud father of five children and has 6 grandchildren. He has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
