Drawing upon 65 years of professional experience, Dr. Schmidt has been a professor of physics with Montana State University since 1973, having previously been an associate professor from 1964 to 1973. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was an assistant professor of physics at Valparaiso University from 1961 to 1964 and an associate researcher and engineer at the Boeing Airplane Company from 1955 to 1957. Earlier in his career, Dr. Schmidt was a mechanical design engineer with Gilfillan Brothers, Inc., from 1953 to 1954.

Dr. Schmidt began his career as a student at Washington State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1951. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1961. A fellow of the American Physical Society, Dr. Schmidt is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and Sigma Xi.

A respected leader in the field, Dr. Schmidt is renowned for his work in his areas of expertise. He holds patents for a piezoelectric wind generator and a pulse modified camera, and he discovered the tricritical point and explained dielectric and conductive behavior in ferroelectric KH2PO4. He has invented and developed a number of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases, and he invented a piezoelectric polymer actuator. Likewise, he discovered the co-existence of ferroelectric and AFE phases with paraelectric phases in proton glass.

Throughout his career, Dr. Schmidt has been recognized for his contributions. He is a grantee of the National Science Foundation, the United States Department of Energy, the United States Department of Defense, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West.
