WEST LAFAYETTE, IN, November 28, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Mark Cushman with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Cushman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Cushman has been a distinguished professor of medicinal chemistry in the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, since 2010. Accepting his first role on campus in 1975 as an assistant professor, he later became an associate professor in 1980 and full professor in 1985. Teaching medicinal chemistry to undergraduate, graduate and professional students, Dr. Cushman also served on several faculty recruiting committees, faculty promotions committees and graduate student recruiting and admission committees during his tenure.

Some of the courses Dr. Cushman has taught have included Organic Chemistry I and II, Advanced Medicinal Chemistry, Chemotherapy of Infectious and Neoplastic Diseases, Drug Classes and Mechanisms and Molecular Targets: Cancer. In more recent years, his research group has been engaged in the design and synthesis of a variety of molecules that interact with specific enzymes and membrane-bound receptors. This effort involves the integration of basic concepts in organic reaction mechanisms, synthetic organic chemistry, structural biology, biochemistry, computational chemistry and pharmacology.

When Dr. Cushman first joined the Purdue faculty more than 40 years ago, he created an organic compound in his lab. It was an undesired byproduct formed during the synthesis of a natural product with anticancer activity. Decades later, more than 500 structural analogues of that byproduct have been synthesized, three of which have been included in clinical trials at the National Cancer Institute with the potential to become mass-produced, life-saving treatments for cancer patients.

With a career centered around academia, Dr. Cushman has also been teaching as an adjunct professor of pharmacology at the School of Medicine at Indiana University in West Lafayette since 2014. He is a former visiting professor and senior Fulbright scholar at the Technical University of Munich in Germany and former postdoctoral scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Cushman has notably invented dozens of patents, holds three licensed inventions and received more than 50 grants for his research from such organizations as the National Institute of Health, the American Chemical Society and the Purdue Research Foundation. He has authored more than 340 articles in peer-reviewed journals as a result of his research, has contributed approximately 175 papers at meetings and conferences and was appointed as associate editor of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in 2012, which is the primary journal in his field. Furthermore, he has been an invited lecturer at more than 80 events for various universities and professional organizations dating back to 1977; most recently, the following lectureships in medicinal chemistry: The Ole Gisvold Lectureship Award in Medicinal Chemistry from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota (2018) and The Philip S. Portoghese Journal of Medicinal Chemistry – Division of Medicinal Chemistry Joint Lectureship (2018).

A longstanding member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for Cancer Research, Dr. Cushman is also an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was recently appointed to the board of directors of Gibson Oncology, LLC in 2018 as well.

Dr. Cushman notably received the 150th Anniversary Alumni Excellence Award from the University of California, San Francisco in 2015, the Chaney Scholar Award for Exceptional Research from Purdue University in 2012 and the Purdue Cancer Research Award in 2004. He has also been included in the fourth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Dr. Cushman was a pre-pharmacy student for two years at Fresno State College, and received a Doctor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of California, San Francisco. He later completed postdoctoral work in organic chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Cushman has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
