Clarence Suelter is currently retired, having worked his entire career at Michigan State University.

With 35 years of teaching experience to his credit, Dr. Suelter is currently retired, having worked his entire career at Michigan State University. In 1961, he was named an assistant professor of biochemistry, becoming the first person hired for the school's newly formed department of biochemistry. He would later become the director of the division of science and mathematics education in 1989, a post he held until his retirement in 1996, working on developing programs to support science teachers in Michigan.

Prior to beginning his career as an educator, Dr. Suelter pursued his education at Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1953. Following his time at Kansas State University, he served as first lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1956. Afterward, he resumed his education by obtaining his doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State University in 1959.

Dr. Suelter's work has earned him immense recognition from Michigan State University. He has garnered the Distinguished Faculty Award, the Distinguished Alumni Faculty Award, the Sigma Xi Certificate of Recognition, and Outstanding Contribution by an Individual from the lauded academic institution. He was also bestowed with the Career Development Award by the National Institutes of Health and the Distinguished Alumni Award at Iowa State University.

Outside of his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Suelter authored the book "Enzymology: A Practical Guide" and edited two versions of "Methods of Biochemical Analysis." He also functioned as an executive editor of the journal "Analytical Biochemistry" between August 1987 and March 1993. After his retirement, he wrote "A History of the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University (1855-2005)" and a comprehensive history of the biochemistry department from its beginning in 1863 to its establishment as the department of biochemistry in 1961 to the current department of biochemistry and molecular biology as of 2011. This history was produced in honor of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the biochemistry department at MSU.
