Judge Martin excelled as the chief judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court of the Western District of Wisconsin from 1978 to 2016. Prior to obtaining this position, he was a partner with Ross & Stevens from 1973 to 1978, and an associate with the firm from 1969 to 1973. In addition to his primary roles, he worked as an instructor and lecturer for the University of Wisconsin Law School, the co-chair of the faculty of an American Law Institute bankruptcy seminar at Stanford University, a faculty member of the Federal Judicial Center Schools for New Bankruptcy Judges, and the chair of the Annual Continuing Legal Education Wisconsin Debtor Creditor Conference.

Mr. Martin studied at Cornell College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 with honors in two major fields of study, political science and religion. He continued his studies at the University of Chicago Law School, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1969. He has been admitted to practice law in the state of Wisconsin, the United States Supreme Court and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin.

A respected leader in his field, Mr. Martin has been affiliated with numerous organizations in his community. A member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Turnaround Management Association, he has served as chair and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Lutheran Social Service of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. He held the roles of secretary, vice president, and president of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. He is a charter fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy and is an emeritus conferee in the National Bankruptcy Conference. Mr. Martin is the author and co-author of several texts and articles to professional journals, most notably the treatise Ginsberg and Martin on Bankruptcy.

Throughout his career, Mr. Martin has been honored for his accomplishments. The recipient of the Adjunct Teacher of the Year Award from the University of Wisconsin Law School, he accepted the ABI William Norton Judicial Excellence Award, and the Turnaround Management Association Chairman's Award. Furthermore, Turnaround Management presented him with an Outstanding Individual Contribution Award. Mr. Martin has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
