A retired scientist and engineer, Dr. Stanford began his career in 1983 as a radiation specialist officer for the U.S. Navy in the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, FL. Working in various roles since that time, including in several capacities with the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX, from 1988 to 2000, as director of security engineering at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center in New Jersey and as a chief scientist and staff engineer with the McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Company, he also served as a senior physical scientist at the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where he retired in 2015 after 11 years in that role.

Dr. Stanford devoted close to three decades to academia as well. He was an adjunct professor of astronomy at Widener University, assistant professor of radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch, adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at the University of New Mexico and adjunct professor of astronomy at Pensacola State College. He was also a curator in the Harold E. Taylor Observatory at Stockton University for a time. During his years at the University of Texas, he also served as the chief of the research and technology department in the Center for Aerospace Medicine and Physiology.

Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Stanford contributed articles to academic journals in engineering, construction and operations in space fields in such publications as the Annals of the New York Academy of Science and Physiological Chemical Physical Science. An associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, he is also a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the New York Academy of Science, the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, The Planetary Society and the Health Physics Society. For his work, Dr. Stanford has been honored with a Basic Research Award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in 2008, was voted Outstanding Faculty at Widener University in 2008 and was a finalist in the NASA Astronaut Selection in 1978. Holding several patents in his field, he has notably been cited in the first and second editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering as well.

Dr. Stanford has held a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies from Stockton University since 1974, Bachelor of Science in physics from Stockton University since 1975 and Doctor of Philosophy in biophysics from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center since 1982. He served as an E-4 in the U.S. Air Force 50th tactical fighter wing at Hahn Air Base in Germany between 1966 and 1970, O-3 lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in 1983 and O-5 commander from 1986 to 1997. He later served as a GS-13 Step 10 for the Department of the Army between 2004 and 2015. Dr. Stanford is also a licensed commercial pilot with over 8,000 hours of flight experience.
