Ulrich Hopfer, MD, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ulrich Hopfer has accepted a 1983 Hoffman-LaRoche Prize from the GI section of the American Physiological Society, as well as an NIH Research Career Development Award from 1976 to 1981.

Since 2012, Dr. Hopfer is a biophysics researcher and a Professor Emeritus of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Initially welcomed into the faculty as an assistant professor of anatomy in 1974, he later taught developmental genetics and anatomy, physiology and biophysics and medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Between 1990 and 2009, he also served Case Western Reserve University as the director of the imaging facility in the Cystic Fibrosis Center.

Prior to his tenure at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Hopfer was a privatdozent in biochemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland for two years beginning in 1972. Likewise, he has worked as a visiting scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany from 1980 to 1981. In more recent years, Dr. Hopfer's research efforts have focused on understanding regulation of cellular functions of epithelia by analyzing gene expression at the whole genome level, particularly in kidney.

Dr. Hopfer has authored more than 170 articles in peer-reviewed journals during his career. He is the author of the chapter 'Digestion and Absorption of Basic Nutritional Constituents' in seven editions of the textbook "Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations" between 1986 and 2011. Appointed to numerous other editorial boards, he also excelled as a longtime editorial board member for several publications, including the American Journal of Physiology and Cell Physiology. Furthermore, Dr. Hopfer was the associate editor for News in Physiological Sciences and the field editor for the European Journal of Physiology.

A member and former treasurer and secretary of the Ohio Physiological Society, Dr. Hopfer is also a longtime member of the American Physiological Society and the American Biophysical Society. He previously maintained involvement with the Society of General Physiologists. Dr. Hopfer earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Goettingen in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from The Johns Hopkins University in 1970.

Honored for his work, Dr. Hopfer has accepted a 1983 Hoffman-LaRoche Prize from the GI section of the American Physiological Society, as well as an NIH Research Career Development Award from 1976 to 1981. In 2012, a symposium was held in his honor by the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Hopfer has also been selected for inclusion in the fifth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
